Yes, this would make some sense.

Only switches the ground pin on the XLR, look how it's wired. It makes no relevant difference to the RCA output.

It would remove a few inches of wire, remember, there are dozends of meters on the transformer itself.

TBH, I suspect what you hear was that 6dB (or so) ultrasonic peak at around 50KHz that all the MKI had, or rather the lack thereof in the MKIII. The big peak also produces a few factions of a dB high frequency boost at the top of the audio band.

I fitted Snubbers to my own MKI's to deal with that peak, switchable. On quick comparison listening I preferred the "unsnubbered" version, in the long run listening I preferred the "snubbered" version.

The Snubber went from the 0dB output to the Wiper of the switch, I have no idea what the values where though, optimised on the bench for flat response at 20KHz IIRC or some such.

The MKIII version has clever winding tricks to avoid the peak without adding stuff...

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to intolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
