Question about older Basie Preamp

I have an older Basie preamp that I have started using with a squeezebox wireless music player and a set of Paramour 2A3s. The sound is very shallow and weak with very little base. I swapped the Basie out with the preamp section of a Yamaha receiver and the sound improved considerably. Is there a impedance mismatch or does anyone have any suggestions?
