My Ella does not have the soft-start feature, so that when switching on the amp the tubes will see the full power supply voltage for a brief moment. I could put in a switch for the B+, but I'm afraid there might be a big thump in the speakers when closing it with the tubes warmed up. A soft-starting feature that ramps up the voltage gradually would probably be the best solution.
In amplifiers with soft start or tube rectification this is not an issue, but with SS rectification and no soft start there could potentially be a danger since an overvoltage only needs to be present for microseconds or less to cause breakdown.
I haven't seen this issue discussed anywhere, and haven't seen any reports that 7N7s or 6F8-Gs (or old 6SN7s)have blown up due to high voltage even though they're a common substitute for new 6SN7s. Nor have I seen any warnings not to use the Ella with early 6SN7s, which I assume many people have already done, probably without problems. Am I just being paranoid, or is there a potential hazard here?
