Hi, All of you
I am so glad that I see all of your name back in this forum. I was wandering what happened to your guys, since your names disappeared suddenly from AudioReview.
My questions is that which turntable would be best for my up-grade. Currently I own Thorens 160 with Grado Signature cartridge. I am thinking to replace that with either Basis 1400/RB-300 or VPIHW-19MkIII/SME-309.
Do you have any professional advice which one I should get? My system consists of CJ Premier-11A/PV-12A(phono on board) with Dunlavy SC-III. Since I live near Princeton, NJ and purchase a large selection of good LP from Princeton Record, I have luxury of owning a lot of good LPs and enjoy more and more vinyl sound rather than CD's. I truely appreciate your opinion.

P.S, I am so delighted that we get a forum that we exchage our hobby togehter and share the excitement that music provides to us. It's wonderful.

I have not heard the Basis so cannot comment on its sound - but I have heard others say that it is very very good. The Rega arm is well known to be a "best buy" in performace. I'm sure the two would make a great combo for $1600 or so.

As to the VPI - before I went with the Hw-19 III/ SME 309 I would go with a TNT Jr/Rega combo. I've heard the TNT on a number of different occasions and have always been impressed. One advantage to VPI is their availability - they are relatively common and VPI's service is suppose to be quite good in the event of a problem.

I am like Werner in that I like the Gyrodec (I am somewhat biased as I own one)much better than the VPI III and a little better than the VPI IV. Not only does it sound great - it looks great. It will always get a comment out of your non-audiophile friends. The appropriate ooohs and ahhhhs from your audiophile friends will come after they've heard it.

Any of the options you've mentioned will sound great and the differences will really be splitting hairs (given all else being equal). Good Luck!

MIght I suggest that you also consider the new
Michell Gyro SE with Rega arm? It has one of the
most effective suspensions in industry, and
is upgradeable.

Of course I have to recommend the Michell, since
I work now for them. On the other hand, it is
not without reason and enthousiasm that I volunteered
for the job of web site designer :-)

Do you know how much Gyro SE cost? Is there any dealer in NJ area? I have not seen that piece before and like to check it out before I make any decision. -young

The Gyro SE is brand new: the prototype was
there in November, and first samples were shipped
to distributors in January or so.

Contact Artech for dealers/prices. Audio Advisor
also carry Michell, and maybe they do the SE.
After all, the smaller SE is much more suited
to mailorder than the GyroDec itself.

Well, not yet...

Daytime job still at IMEC, but our group is founding a
new custom image sensor design company (we were one
of the true pioneers of CMOS camera chips, and now
there are a zillion companies marketing the stuff,
except us), so will leave IMEC within a few months from now.

Nighttime job: web design for Michell

Weekend job: audio design for myself :-)
