Although with 500 or so LPs I do worry about the floor sagging here...

That's what our 2nd grade teacher used to play "The Youth Fitness Song" for our class.

Ah, a real monster of a hit song by Robert Preston. I think I still have my copy around here someplace.

Not only does he use poor equipment with high VTF, but he lays records flat in large stacks. Much of the LPs I noticed were those that hang around forever in thrift stores. Judging by the condition of many of the jackets, I bet the records were scratched as well.

A real well organized monster collection in good condition and played on a high quality turntable is that of our own cactuscowboy.

By the way, I only play 78s on my Audiovox 300VA vacuum tube classroom player seen in the picture.

...a guy in Roanoke Va. has a collection of 40K records as well. During the interview he had Kind of Blue playing in the background.

Just finding 40K albums and stacking them around the house in less than 20 years doesn't seem too hard to beat. Probably could do it fairly easily with a few grand (or maybe less) - plus gas and time.

I know a radio industry exec who has approx 45 years worth of promo albums etc. I don't know the number of albums, but it's a lot. A real lot ...
He had to move them to his concrete slab garage due to house integrity issues!

a larger stylus diameter for playing 78s with that cartridge. The 1229 is completely refurbished after many frustrating hours.

As you know, manually playing 78s can be a pain because of the short play times. You have to be doing something else while sitting right next to the turntable. Maybe someday I will refurbish my Garrard RC88 changer or find a changer spindle for the 1229.

Playing 78s on my $20 Audiovox 300VA is certainly cheaper. The only problem is the quick wear on the sapphire needles when playing older 78s.

I think having one copy of every re-issue might get you to 40,000 fast. n/t, posted on September 13, 2023 at 20:00:28

if he's actually listened to everything he's bought at least once
probably a collector?

At some 35 records a week, five records a day that's doable, especially
if many are 45's or 78's, LPs would require more... discipline.

I once helped sell a 12,000 LP collection, 80% of which were still sealed.

Guy had started as a listener/collector and eventually (when Tower was clearancing
LPs to make room for CDs) just became an amasser. Retired, he bought a few LPs
most every day. Many were still in Tower LP bags when he died. His wife said the
sealed LPs were "pride of ownership", which never made sense to me regarding
18 copies of "Benny in Brussels" (from original, played copy to budget, sealed
copies), but what do I know?

There was a LOT of chaff in that collection, but the vintage LPs were gold.

Leon Russell on 78. That's got to be a collector's item. :-)

Dave gets truncated styli (in various sizes) from Expert Stylus in the UK.
He also has a mono MC cartridge with a 78 stylus.

truncated were no longer available. They were also $150 each just to play an occasional 78. Ouch.

Yes it would, but unfortunately, it's a 45rpm. Damn. I think the latest, posted on September 14, 2023 at 18:08:10

78s were in the 60s in India. The Beatles are on a few of those India 78s.

The horror! Not only is he playing his LPs on a Califone, he is destroying the Edison Diamond Disc Record on the Victrola. That record is recorded vertically and designed to play with a special diamond stylus. The Victrola only responds to lateral movement and uses a crude steel needle. It will only take a play or two to ruin it.

I guess he's proud of this too . . ., posted on September 17, 2023 at 09:40:59
