The Acoustic Signature Montana Neo turntable is left running throughout the listening session, mainly because it takes 35-40 seconds to come up to speed after the platter is stopped. Records are changed while the platter is spinning. The leather mat would often move/rotate during record changes, obscuring the gold-plated Silencer inserts.

Here is a solution to this minor annoyance. This adds small circles of the equivalent of Post It Notes® dry tacky/sticky stuff to the bottom of the leather mat. No more slipping! And no reside on the platter. Cost <$5.

Have and love my AS Final Tool. I too leave the platter spinning but not because it takes too much time to get to speed, it's just easier and quicker that way. Friend does the same with his Walker table. Never had any problem with mat slippage, including the Herbies Mat currently in use.

Enjoy that table. I know I would!

I thought it was odd for a hobbyist to be using a turntable mat with such a sophisticated table, so I checked over to their website. Not a turntable mat to be found, but they do have a selection of weights and clamps.

I have always heard a tight association between the vinyl and the plater was more desirable, to give the imparted energy someplace to go, other than reflecting back into the vinyl.

Of course, I have been very happy in the past using turntables that were designed to use mats. I even bought a special French damping mat designed for the cast aluminum direct drive platters I had at the time.

the table I have now is designed to be used without a mat, and comes with a clamp. from glancing around the acoustic signature site, it didn't seem like they incorporated mats in the design. What gives with your decision to add a mat?

I don't see any clamps being shown on the individual turntables on the Acoustic Signature site either, but I am sure they are not implying that a clamp is not recommended. After all, they sell 4 different clamps. I use a clamp because, IMO, it sounds better.

I have been using the Origin Live mat for years on various tables, from the 7-pound synthetic platter on the Clearaudio Ovation, to the 20-pound aluminum platter on the VPI Aries 3, all with good results. As I mentioned in the Montana Neo review (link below), the mat that was included with the AS table performs similarly to the OL mat. I use a mat because, IMO, it sounds better.

As a hobbyist, I consider almost every claim about the benefit of a product to be just marketing until that claim is validated by listening.

my unstated stance is... turn off the platter. when re-starting, give the platter a physical spin assist. picking an LP off a spinning platter risks abrasion from any particles between record and platter/mat. it comforts me to do it that way and a clamp is WAY easier to apply or remove that way.

do it your way if you must.

I've been doing it that way for far too long that I feel I would've noticed any damage to records due to abrasion. Seriously, keeping the platter moving just helps keep the music going all night!

I gave up doing it that way when fast spinning after one slipped out of my hand. A 10" 78 can travel far! )MT(, posted on June 20, 2022 at 16:04:56

a record clamp is a much more positive solution to the problem. in addition to reducing some warps, the intimate contact of the record, plus it is a more secure way of stabilizing the LP and perhaps reducing any possible platter ringing. all in all, a more scientific approach.

Acoustic Signature and Origin Live arms? So cool.., posted on June 16, 2022 at 16:25:04
Could we see a long shot of the table and some commentary on how you like your arms? I know I'm pushin' it. Thank you.

You're not pushing it. I'm using the Origin Live Agile arm more often, which could be a result of it being a little heavier and better sounding with the cartridges on hand. In other words, its compliance is just a bit lower than the TA-7000 Neo arm. The AS arm feels massless.

Both arms are beautifully made and work well. Their cueing is very different: the AS arm is straight mechanical - no damped lowering unless the operator makes it so. The OL arm has dampened cueing - slowly lowers to the record surface.

The OL arm comes with an excellent cable, while AS includes a low-end Audioquest cable that they assume you will replace.

There is a window behind the turntable reflecting off the gold-plated Silencers in the platter.

Thanks Jerry! Awesome turntable pics., posted on June 16, 2022 at 20:18:58
And fascinating about the arms. I really appreciate you taking the time to elaborate.
