I'm being forced (well, arm gently twisted anyway) to cull dupes and dispose of them. I'm okay with it because it's needed doing for too long, but in one case in particular I find myself in a real "Sophie's Choice" situation, or rather a Sondek's choice I guess, and I need some help.

I have three copies. I need to get to one. There's an original 1977 Bernie Grundman ABC copy, a MoFi copy, and a Cisco Music copy. I love them all, but I need to pick one and I just can't. They all sound so good, but for different reasons.

Which one would you keep?

I have an original 1977 Bernie Grundman ABC copy (promo but not white label) and a MoFi copy.

I play the ABC copy.

Wasn't this the album where the engineer from MoFi phoned Grundman to boast of the high level of kick drum that he had been able to cut with Grundman responding that he and Donald Fagen has spent a whole afternoon trying to cut it lower as it was excessive? If so that would put one of the issues up for sale if it was me.

Keep all three---why deny yourself of the pleasure you're seeking.
Nobody can force you to sell.

Have some fun.

Single, are you?

I promised her I'd eliminate the dupes. I feel compelled to try in the name of domestic tranquility.

Stay tuned though.

I see we both enjoy ESLs. Would like to hear your MLs.

I tend to agree with Fremer on this one:

I was going to suggest that you argue that these are not in fact dupes for the reasons you state. Two MOFIs or two ABCs would be actual dupes, right? But then I realized that this logic has probably contributed to my decades-long singleness, so never mind.

That's a solid argument. I'd go with it.

If you have to chose 1

1.) Keep the original (if you value originals most)
2.) Keep the Cisco (if you believe MF's claim it has the best sound and you plan on system upgrades)
3.) Keep the version that sounds best on your system.

I have multiple versions of most of my favorite records from my youth - including 4 or 5 versions of every Led Zeppelin record.

Good luck if it were me I would try hard to talk my way out of it.

Let me know which copy you want to get rid of and I will buy it off you.

Is someone being... unreasonable?

Anyway.... NOT a Mofi fan, never heard the Cisco, always LOVED the original.

Now, I have dupes of QUITE a few LPs and when the going gets tough I may ask you to help me out.

IF anyone around here becomes... unreasonable...

although a bit dark sounding it's the original release and will possibly hold the greatest value. I dunno.

I love my MoFi copy. It is my go-to LP to show off my LP-12. nt, posted on August 24, 2021 at 05:33:00

My Trudeau-bashing sig line cause too many problems, so I guess I will go back to ridiculing the portly orange fella.

Yes, but that additional storage was part of a larger plan which included a culling as well.

Unreasonable? No, not really. I mean I did promise her I'd do it and not really unreasonable to do what you say.

Once the process is through, I suspect there will be a small handful of titles that I'll make the case for keeping two copies of, and I think she'll be okay with that as long as I show good faith in keeping my promise. She is a redhead, but she's mellowed over the years.

Sorry, Aaron, but I've started a hope chest for a dear friend of mine in Cali that once his divorce is settled will be buying a house and an LP rig. Otherwise, I'd sell'em.

After reading all the comments and sleeping on it, I'm going to hang on to two of the three. I think I can sell that idea.

Keeping the original because that's the way I first heard and fell in love with Aja, and it will always be the sound I remember. Also, this is the copy I gave her as a gift when we were both in college, and it has sentimental value to her and me.

Also keeping the Cisco for all the reasons Fremer said. It really does sound spectacular on my system.

The MoFi goes into the hope chest I've started for my friend for when he gets an LP system.

I have 2 copies of the BG original, one with a demonstration copy gold promo stamp pressed at the Colombia Santa Maria plant and another original pressed at Columbia Terre Haute. The promo sounds maybe a teensy bit better but they are almost too close to call, both with deadwax matrix #AB-1006. I also have the often maligned MFSL-yeah, the highs and lows do sound a bit boosted but I find it a fun listen.

With the vast majority of records, I try to limit my self to one really great pressing, absent other criteria like mono and stereo mixes. With Aja, I love it so much I have to make an exemption. If the Cisco fell into my lap at a non-extortionate price, I'd grab it. Would love to at least hear it.

I think my original is a Santa Maria. It has SXT in the run-out, and if I remember correctly I think that was the SM mark.

It sounds very good.

sensible solution!

Had always been a Dan fan and first playing AJA when it was released
the recording SQ just knocked me out. Plus I loved the music.

One of the too few times where the mojo of the two were completely in sync.

Hmmm...
I've got the MoFi, a Japanese pressing, an original ABC, (and the SHM SACD.) Maybe I should get me a Cisco too?

Keep the original if it's an early AB or AA 1006.

The others are disposable and will probably net you a tidy sum.

"If you're a fan of Aja you should try to track down an original (ABC AB-1006). It beats the Cisco and especially the thuddy Mobile Fidelity from way back when. There are two catalog numbers here: AA-1006 and AB-1006. AA is actually a later catalog number but both editions were mastered by Bernie Grundman (though you won't see "BG" in the inner groove area) and I can't hear much of a difference between the two."

I made a mistake. Overall the original is better.
