 While changing cartridges on my Ariston/SME table, I was thinking about mounting screw orientation.

Do you prefer having tonearm mounting screws face up or face down? I see lots of folks put the bolts on top. It's clearly a visual thing, but I prefer seeing screw heads on top. I looked back at a pic of the same table from 1983 with a different arm and found my preference hasn't changed.

 Arm and cartridge are at eye level which makes all but setting azimuth a snap.

Next time you get stitches at the ER, probably resulting from your use of knife-edge bearings, ask to keep the hemostat. Invaluable for holding small nuts captive and, of course, as a roach clip.

 For looks, screw head on top, for ease of mounting, nut on top but reels Ithaca is right about hex screws.

Have you seen the oversized screws sold by Soundsmith? I want some!

Your SME seems to have a fixed headshell. In lieu of a detachable shell, I prefer to remove the arm for cartridge mounting. With a Grace 707 or other captive bearing arm, I will invert the entire arm, maybe not such a good idea with knife edge bearing arms.

Of course it's easier with a removable she'll or wand.

 Yeah, I removed the entire armboard with the SME and carefully inverted it.

Since the M97 isn't threaded, I lightly attached the nuts to the screws first, then wiggled the cartridge between them and tightened the screws.

 I haven't even thought about my Shure V15 IV mounting in about 20 years.

 I am thinking of selling my old table, but wanted to keep the Shinon Red that was in it and use the Shure M97 instead. :)

 ...hex-head screws.

Hex heads are easier to tighten and since the wrench is captive, it won't slip.

I usually put the screw on top.

 Facing up , & , the slot in the screw heads must line up perpendicular to the body of the cart.

 I prefer the screw head up for ascetic reasons, but I will do what ever works best for the particular combination. I was in the business and have setup many more tables than I can remember. I have done it both way many times.

 Screw entry from the top makes it easier to make adjustments and tighten when aligning the cartridge. However, it depends very much on the cartridge design/shape and nut type. Ortofon have the right idea with the 2M series and pre-tapped holes in the cartridge. If only other companies had thought of that!
For example with a Denon DL110, they have a knurled round nut which is recessed within the screw channel so it is VERY hard to lock in place when tightening the screw without damaging the body in the process. The intention with this cartridge is that the nuts are on top.

 Agree about having threaded bodies. Both a Shinon and Dynavector are that way, but not the Shure M97 I installed.

 Whatever direction is easiest and is least likely to result in accidental damage to the cartridge is the direction I choose. I could not care less how it looks, either way.
