Stepped attenuator - making a step between levels

 I'm using a 25k Gold Point stepped attenuator. There is a situation where at times I need to use a step "in between" a step.

On the chart, between steps 4 and 5, the difference between the two resistors is 83 ohms. Could I add an inline 41 ohm resistor to capture that "in between" volume level.

Or should I go with a pre attenuator by cutting it down by one or two db's?

 Goldpoint makes a 42 position volume control. I would upgrade the volume control before doing anything else. I had the same problem with my ZTPreamp and the upgraded pots solved it.

 stupid add on question. I'm using the Gold Point with the Bent Audio IR remote motor unit with 15 degree increments.

If I put in the 42 stepped attenuator and kept the same motor, would it work - within reason? And by reason what I mean is I usually listen to one station at one level. ONLY if I change the station does that require an adjustment. I'm not overly critical about that. Mainly the SET level of my MAIN listening station.

 Yeah, if you're operating (nominally) down near steps 4 and 5 then you have way too much signal and are using too much attenuation.

I would add the pre-attenuator. Or maybe get rid of some excess voltage gain elsewhere in your system.
