although many feel the porous material qualifies it more as a sound absorber.

At such close quarters the absorption is likely a good thing. The open cell foam will do much absorption at high freq and will diffuse mids, so it might be a better balance that you would get just using diffusion- which would be more effective if your speakers were further out. Try and see how well it works.
