Hi,

I heard good things about ECC32 tubes in place of 6SN7 tubes.
However, I understand that they are not a direct replacement for 6SN7.
ECC32 draws 50% more heater current than 6SN7.

My Wright Sound WLA12A uses a pair of 6SN7 tubes.
Can I use ECC32 tubes instead without damaging my transformer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Who did you hear that from, and how were they using it? The plate curves for the ECC32 are not even remotely similar to the 6SN7. Even if heater current is not an issue, you would need to redesign the entire circuit to accommodate the differences.

They are expensive, come in a Mullard variety, and sound different from the 6SN7 if plugged in the same circuit. Isn't that the internet's definition of "superior".

(For the sarcastically challenged, this is sarcasm)

Tube differences, IMO, pale in comparison to design, parts and physical implementation differences. The poster should trust the designer as they made all of the design choices including the tube type.

Besides being very different, the ECC82 is nowhere near as linear as the 6sn7.

Here are the links I found about ECC32 tubes:

https://mullard.org/collections/audio-valve-ecc32-cv181-cv1988-13d2-b65-6sn7gt-twin-triode?srsltid=AfmBOopCoEBydy7FIm5HRZdHP-E5Ws61H8rHSfiT3S9bSkhnxB1_DPyS

Some forks claimed superior sound from ECC32 and I have a pair already, so I was curious about them.

Thanks.

There are other good alternatives like 7N7, 6P5, posted on March 14, 2025 at 05:05:51

The 6P5 is a nice sounding tube. Less heater current in fact.

There are some esoteric 7N7 tubes like the National Union "holy grail" round plate ones. I happen to have one for sale, so PM me if interested.
