Roger Kennedy has gone incommunicado! Roger has serviced my Hickok 539B tube tester for about fifteen years now. The last work he did on it was a big job; he replaced the power transformer with a new one. Finding someone to manufacturer the PT took over two years.

Well, a few months ago, I noticed it was not testing 6DJ8 or 6ES8 tubes correctly. I tested tubes that were known new, as well as ones that had been tested on another Hickok I have. It tested them as low, or the meter would go up and then drift down to below minimum. This behavior is not happening when testing any other tubes that I have tried.

I wrote to Roger back on Janyary 7th. I followed up after a month or so and then called twice and sent two more emails. No replies!

Has anyone else tried to reach him and been successful?

Thanks,
Steve

Roger rebuilt and calibrated my Hickok 752A several years ago. Even then it took a year to get it back. I heard since then he had serious health issues.

Hi Steve, I know exactly what you mean with Roger as I've had some similar experiences with him in the last few years. I can help you out. I own several testers and have some good contacts with good tech's You are welcome to ring me up and we can talk some testers etc. Send me a private message with your number and a good time to reach you or I will respond with mine...That being said I have 2 Hickok 539 testers done up by one of the best Hickok restoration guys in the business. What you are likely experiencing is oscillation which is common on these testers with the 6DJ8 tubes and similar types. I have a work around fix for this issue I use with my testers that I can share with you.......Dave

Can I contact you off-line for more information?

Have a 539B that works (or 'worked' last time it was plugged in) but has a couple issues (mostly tube connections, etc) that need attention.

And does anyone actually 'calibrate' these things anymore?

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

Hi John PA,

No, I never got a response from Roger Kennedy. On a whim, I tried calling him just now and it went to voice mail.
