I found out the frequency response (up to 14 KHz, my actual hearing limit) that suits me fine with my tube/SS audio gear for listening at an average ambient level of 75-85 dB SPL.
For the enquiring minds that would love to investigate if they need somthing similar I attach the three basic figures that sum up the reasons why there is a hearing loss in ambient bass and high reproduction.

Omnes feriunt, ultima necat.

...but they need to be switchable. My ongoing preamp project includes unity-gain James controls that can be switched out. How else to easily accomplish not only some semblance of loudness compensation but also correction for room conditions?

I have found many CDs suffer from old master tapes. For instance, the album 'You', by Gong, needs the highs turned up a bit, as they are somewhat muffled compared to the LP from earlier years. The original CD of Genesis TLLDOB, the low frequencies were almost nonexistent, compared to the LP version. Having a way to adjust the frequency balance is handy.

There's your problem right there; playing ceedees.

Lesson: no ceedees, no tone controls. Sorted.

they've known about this since the 50's but I don't agree with the word 'limit' like your hearing at 14k drops like a stone. I'm not an audiologist but I would think it diminishes swiftly after that. Mine is 16k left, 14kright.

I have dynamic woofers on my electrotats below 100hz and they are the only thing that needs a boost at low volumes, like in the morning when I play music at 60-65db. That's why they call them dynamic speakers with a need to be pushed to respond best

My ears are the most sensitive in the morning and relaxed STS. A sound that's loud to me in the morning becomes normal soon after as the day progresses. Vacuums are too loud period and I always have something to muffle the volume. My wife on the other hand uses one every morning and I run to the hills

So at low volumes I turn the bass up a bit, that's it
