OK, DIY in the form of a kit, but still...

Doc Bottlehead's 6FJ7 based 'Spud' amp (S.E.X or Single Ended Experimenters kit) can be used as either a headphone amp or 2 Watt 8 Ohm Single Ended amp suitable for REALLY high sensitivity speakers.

Somehow I managed to cobble it together and it actually worked.

And how!

Driving my 106dB EdgarHorns where 2 Watts should be plenty it has all of the 'poop' the horns require in a 360 Sq. Ft. space.

Better my 300B amp? Certainly quieter!

'SET Magic'? Indeed!

No hurry to go back to the 300B.

And I can plug in a headphone and it just cuts off the speakers and drives the headphones.

Both of the triodes in a 6DN7/6FJ7 bottle are more linear than the usual dissimilar dual triode TV tubes - I sometimes say it's the poor man's 45 :^) Since we put in the better iron around a decade ago, I've been very happy with the sound.

I use mine in a bedroom/TV system, with 89dB JBL L36's.

You guys did a great job of designing it for low noise as well..., posted on October 21, 2020 at 06:11:19

Just did the C4S after a week or so of listening, but haven't tried it yet. Still on the bench but will run it today.

Plan to build a second one and bi-amp my horns. Maybe even add and active x-over.

It's that good.
