My first post to Tape Trail...

My trusty old Aiwa AD-F800 three-head cassette deck is sick. The signal from the play head isn't getting to the Dolby circuitry: I just hear a hiss at the headphone out (and line outs), and this hiss is modified as I would expect by the Dolby B and C circuits, but there is no sound at all from the tape (I have tried plenty). It still works as a headphone amp from the line inputs, which is what I use the deck for these days.

Do you think it is saveable? Is it worth fixing? It has only seen light use over its twenty-year or so lifetime, but I have lots of old tapes that I'd like to listen to from time to time.

More generally, is there anyone around (in the UK specifically) who services cassette decks of this vintage?

Thanks,

Alex

I have a nice looking Aiwa AD-F800 that does not play but mave have parts you need to fix yours. It powers on but will not work. Make me a fair offer & its yours as long as you pay shipping.

Hello! I'm here in the States. I need the door to the cassette compartment I'm currently having my AIWA AD-F800 re-belted. What can we arrange? Thanks for your reply.

I have had several cassette decks set up & repaired in the past by Andrew who trades as Abacus Electronics. His website is www.abacuselectronics.co.uk. He has done a very good job and can turn his hand to anything. He lives in Leeds and his contact phone no is 0113 2747064. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the reply, Adrian. What are Andrew's prices like?

I think I might even still have the original packaging for my deck...

I had my machines aligned quite a while ago (at least 4 years) - he was charging about £32 an hour then. It would be worth phoning him to discuss (check the website if necessary).
