 Nothing too funky in design; 8-ish ohm loading; preferring tonality over magnum bass or extra-articulation, cone or hybrid types.

My Infinity Ren 80's are getting old. Foam, rubber, plastic are getting brittle. I love these things, but nothing lasts forever.

I read raves about the new (old) KLH 5's, but they might be a bit etched; not sure.

Thanks for tips.

 I recently traded in a pair of LRS, which I dearly loved, for a pair of
1.7is, which I am also loving. You owe it to yourself to audition them.

 I love maggies, if you have the room and an amp that can drive them they might be a good choice. Since you already have EMIT drivers, floor standers with ribbon tweeters may be appealing. Salk makes some a smidgeon above your price point. ProAc has some really nice ones as well, but they are more expensive. I have heard Salk ribbon models at CAF and they sounded great.

I can think of two very sophisticated enterprises that regard that package as the value leader in that product category.

 because that's a REALLY decent set of speakers you are considering getting rid of.

I'd be trying to figure out how I could revive them for less that a grand?

 I just installed a pair of Magnapan LRS speakers that are driven by a pair of Parasound JC 1 monoblocks and augmented (45 Hz/24 dB) with a pair of KEF KC62 subs. The sound is excellent. The speakers and the subs pair seamlessly. Of course the catch is the need for a high-current amp for the speakers.

Ours are '07 models and I haven't been able to part with them, until I can find Model 5A's within 150 miles.

 or .7 Maggies with two good subs - easy 4 Ohm load but very inefficient so you need power if running full bandwidth.

What's your amplifier?

 check out the offerings at Underwood HiFi. Having owned Magnepan 3.5Rs IMO, there are much better choices that are much less amp dependent
