A friend lent me a 36 year old, beat to shit, pair of Ohm Walsh 2's.

And.... they sound fantastic. I love the huge, open image. The speakers just disappear.

What a hoot.

I agree. Glad you are enjoying them. I have heard Ohms and was impressed.

I would appreciate some comments on how they sound on small scale jazz, vocals, large scale classical and rock, if you have the time.

I am considering a pair as a second (or maybe Maggies) set to rotate into my system for a change of pace. I've been watching the used market.

These are on audiogon, but a little pricey. There is also a pair on Ohm's website updated by them for similar $.

I've had the newer Ohm 1000's for several years. Nothing I've ever tried in my small listening room (10' x 11' x 8') has come close to creating the ambient feel of the performance in this room. Actually feel the room sounds "bigger" in fact. For the record, the 1000 is designed to work in a room of this size. All genres sound very good, but the 1000 excels on smaller scale and acoustic jazz for sure. The smaller room size and its acoustics probably dictate this more than anything.

because of my room i would love a pair of Walsh's...doing, posted on April 26, 2018 at 12:51:31

time right now with some Sonab's and missed out on a pair of Walsh's here locally that were cosmetically challenged but sounded great :(

Those Ohm F's were one of the few components I really regretted selling, though it took some time for me to realize my mistake.

Many "audiophiles" don't understand musical instrument dispersion patterns, room acoustics, nor loudspeaker dispersion patterns.

Have I ever mentioned any of these topics before?

So they disappear, but is there any sense of imaging? I've never heard them.

The Bose 901s "disappeared" by reflecting a messy out of phase signal off the wall behind them. You got a very wide, generalized sound.

Wow, does that bring back memories! I used to have a set of Walsh 2's many years ago. I loved to stand directly in front of one speaker and distinctly hear the other speaker. It was a fun parlor trick for non audiophiles at the time. One day, I got the bright idea to adjust the balance all the way to the left speaker, move it out on the patio with some long piece of lamp cord I found laying around somewhere, and entertain everyone at a pool party going on that afternoon. The combination of the hot North Carolina summer heat, music probably played way too loudly, and what can only be described as an overindulgence in adult beverages, and lo and behold, I would up with a completely blown tweeter. Can you say clipping? Funny thing is, I have no idea what I did with those speakers. I think I gave them to someone, but after all these years, I don't remember who. I haven't thought about those speakers in a long time. Thanks for the fond memories. And yes, it was a fun pool party!

I remember hearing the Ohm A's (big brothers to the F's) when they first came out. Driven by an Ampzilla. They were terrific. I was a high school kid at the time, so owning a pair was out of the question. And they were so different than the typical boxes of the day, I had a hard time getting my head wrapped around them. But boy, they sounded great.

Lots of fun. Many years ago, I had the 4s. About 4-5years ago I got the 5000s. Same house sound-extremely spacious, DEEP DEEP soundstage. Warm and smooth. Imaging is good, but not razor sharp. They sound good with medium powered amps, but they really sound best with lots of juice (200W or more). They really love digital amps.
What they do well, they do better than any other speaker I've heard.

I have been intrigued by these speakers for many years, but have never heard a pair.

I am assuming they are omni-directional, radiating sound in all directions? If so, I wonder how precise their imaging may be. I owned, for a very short period of time, a pair of Bose 901s. They were spacious and the speakers "disappeared", but they were not good for lots of music because they scattered sound all over the wall behind them. This would result in a single singer's voice sounding billboard sized. I got rid of them pronto.

Just curious.

I am glad you are enjoying your speakers!

I wonder what the vertical dispersion angles are on those, I
don't see that spec on the Ohm site.

I think just a coaxial driver facing up to a plastic 360 degree
deflector would do the job nicely too.

My dad had a pair of speakers that used that exact design.

Don't have any recollection as to the brand or model, but was built along the levels of something from Radio Shack.

My thoughts? The design was worthwhile, and the speakers could have been pretty special if they had used a decent driver.

I actually have those Rat Shack omni weatherproof speakers in storage.
I plan on digging them out and see what I can do with them. I think
they may use an 8" driver, not sure.

Also, remember the old JBL Aquarius tower used the same principle.

I would love to find cabinets for the Ohm Walsh 2 or 4 in decent condition and have Ohm install the newest applicable drivers. I love the pyramidal design of those 1980s models. The straight sides, with or without curved edges, don't strike me as visually appealing.

I listened to the Ohm Walsh 2s at a Tech HiFi in Framingham, MA when they first came out and was blown away. I'd just recently purchased a pair of KLH Model 150s, which I'd chosen over the similarly priced Ohm Model Ls. To me the bass in the KLHs sounded tighter and more natural than the Ohm Ls, but later I kind of regretted that choice. But I digress . . . Anyhoo, the Walsh 2s just blew away my KLH's and I thought about taking advantage of their trade up policy. But at the time, I had a receiver that was not up to the 4 ohm load, so . . .

But, yeah, I loved those Walsh 2s. Will keep my eyes open, or maybe just spring for a new model soon. Just wish they still made them in that same classic shape.

I also had a pair of Fs back in 1975 or 76. I also regret selling them. They had the most magical image I've ever heard from a pair of speakers, even if they weren't well suited for high volume. I tried a pair of 200s in the early 2000s. They were very good and I could have lived with them, but they were not magical.

Of course, if I had kept the Fs, they'd need a complete, and very expensive, rebuild by Harder or someone else as Ohm no longer services them.

My experience with my Fs (which I owned) and the 200s (which I auditioned for 2 months) is that they had good imaging -- very natural, if not pinpoint -- and a large soundstage.

That's my exact take on the 1000's. They "image" in the same way I hear the music in a live setting. In other words, naturally.

Anyone remember the Infinity speakers that used the Walsh driver for the top? I had a pair and remember them fondly.

I bought one of the first production pairs of Ohm Walsh 2000s when they came out in 2009. They will probably be my last speaker purchase. My review is posted on the Ohm web site. There are other audiophile web site forums that have huge Ohm threads. Overall, most people have similar impressions of them. They image just fine, although you will be a few rows back in the hall. I run them with a pair of Vandersteen 2Wq subs with M5-HP crossovers. Cheap, cheerful and sound the way I like it - spacious, warm, detailed and dynamic. There are no speakers I have heard in their price range I would rather own. John Strohbeen, owner of Ohm and designer of these speakers, is a genius, IMHO.

I still own 2 pairs of Walsh 2's and they are one of the only models that are likely still functional after all of these years. Even if they look like they've been hit by a truck chances are they still work. I sold a newer pair of Micro Talls as I preferred the 2's. Great speakers that have withstood the test of time
