I need advice: I am going to buy a turntable from Canuck Audio Market and made a payment via PayPal but the seller is reluctant to answer my e-mails in which I asked for confirmation. Before payment, he used to answer promptly.

For how long should I wait before lodging a PayPal claim? I don't have a PayPal account so I made a purchase through my relative who has such an account. Before that, I informed the seller that I am ready to pay, then made a payment, notified him thereof, and asked for confirmation twice... No reply.

I am trying to convince myself that the seller might have been away from his PC, might have been away from his place, etc., but I think it is annoying in any case.

Is there any procedure for withdrawing the funds from my relative's PayPal account?

He said I would lose due to exchange rate difference...

And for how long should a buyer wait in general for the seller's response before making a claim?

I firmly believe that the seller-buyer relationship must be transparent and that a buyer should not behave like that.

If you've sent a payment, then you bought a turntable, right? Not "going to buy," but "bought."

How long to wait? Wait until the seller misses the date you agreed to. (That's a hint.)

Can your relative file a Paypal claim? Sure, though it will be complicated by the fact the you are the party buying the item. Using someone else's Paypal account or credit card makes unraveling any deal very difficult.

Next time, spell out everything in an email, something like this:

This is my understanding of our deal. I'm buying 1 Superwidget, per your ad in Canuck Audio Mart, attached. The price is $357.12 plus $22.50 shipping. I will send you payment of $379.62 via Paypal within 2 days. You will ship the widget, insured for $357.12, via UPS ground, within 5 days of receiving payment. Please respond that you agree, and I will send payment. Thanks.

Get the seller to agree to the specifics before sending money. No need to specify what happens if either party breaches the agreement. Keep it simple and specific.

Sorry you didn't see the bad feedback. For me, any bad feedback is a deal-killer. There are lots of scoundrels who maintain perfect feedback, and the ones who don't are really the bottom of the barrel.

Good luck.

Thank you for the valuable advice, Bill.

All I have to do is wait for some time. At least the item is marked as "sold" now.

Recent developments:

The seller shipped the turntable on Saturday. But... he wrote that the post office people made him remove the outer box (!) for which I paid additional $20 CAD saying that the double box does not meet the "size limitations", so he had to remove it.

It's unbelievable...The turntable's net weight is 12 kg only and the packaging cannot be oversized!

I wrote him if the parcel comes damaged I won't accept it and it will be returned back to him...

I am quite upset.

All I have to do it wait for the parcel to arrive.

I am wondering how should I act then?

The item was received after a long, long wait (approx. 3 weeks)

The result: I've been enjoying the turntable for more than a year. Yes, it arrived in a single (original manufacturer's) box, but in perfect and safe condition.
