I have a matched pair of Gold Lion PX300B. One tube always gives one loud pop to the speaker at startup. I did a channel swap and the pop moves with the tube so it's this particular tube. Other than the pop, it works and sounds great. Is this just a minor issue and shouldn't be a cause of concern? Right now I have about 100 hours on them. Thanks.

There are many possible causes, but the one that bothers me mmost is grid-cathode arcing. This is especially likely with direct-coupled drivers; some tubes are more sensitive to this than others. It can seriously degrade the cathode life.

You might try watching the tube (in a very dark room!) to see if there is a flash.

No flash and it starts up normally just like the other tube except with a loud pop from the speaker. I guess it's just a minor manufacturing issue I have to live with.

Paul,
I remember talking to the engineer at EHX. They use gold grids on these tubes. Unless the time constant on the power up and it is using direct couple that could still be the problem.

Bob,
Do note there is very little difference in all the EHX 300B's other than matching and quality at QC level. If this doesn't happen with other brands you may want to give them a call. Also what amp is this in?
