I'm seriously considering having TAL build me a 2a3 amp but first I need some advice. What would be the best transformer to get from the options listed to begin with. Thanks in advance.

As for power transformers, I use custom wound Heyboer. I always specify M6 laminations.

Link?

some thoughts on why to use higher loading 5K pri instead of 2.5K

first and foremost less distortion! greater grip on the woofers(better damping)

wider Freq response usually more top end

These are very easy to measure and I have done just that.

Hi,

I purchased a 2A3 from TAL this past summer. I realllllly like the amp. Best audio decision I have made. You can reach me off line if you want to talk about some possible upgrades for your TAL amp.

Regarding transformers, here is what I did and would do:

1. Output transformers: Hashimoto. I really like these

2. Power transformers: I do not like the Hammond that came with the amp. I am going to get a different, hopefully upgraded brand like Lundahl, Electroprint or Magnequest, Dave Slagle or Monolith.

IF you have the money, get want you want the first time around. Don't think about upgrading latter, assuming you have the $s.

Andy, Is that $5k and $3k for those transformers? My apologies if I misunderstood you.

Another vote for Dave Slagle. Made in USA too.

I do not see output transformers on ANTEK's webpage, posted on October 18, 2016 at 06:38:50

I assume that is a list of output transformers.

Don't forget Dave Slagle of Intact

It could be that Intact transformers could be requested.

I don't know TAL's policy.

I'm pretty happy with the Lundahl iron I have. I think a higher primary sounds better - the LL1663 is 5K into 8 ohms. LL1664 is 3K.

Andy, do you prefer the 5K over a 2.5K? My Hashimotos have 2.5K or 3.5K and I am using 8ohm speaker output. Currently using 2.5K. What is the supposed benefit of 3.5k?

I think Don Garber is now using Hashimoto OPTs in his 2A3 models (and maybe others), if that says anything.

I heard from another builder the best for him to be the Hashimoto too. That may be the ticket. Thanks.
