I have read on the net about Organic sound of SHINDO amplifiers,Realistic sound of WAVAC amplifiers and above all the ethereal sounding ONGA KU by Kondo, all from Japan.
Can anybody recommend a SET amplifier sounding natural ,3D holographic realistic with msuicians in the room kind of sound with output of 10wpc or more.Though Kondo seems to be my kind of sound but the price allows me to just dream of these amplifiers

Hi,

When you go above two or three watts, all amp choices become compromised in the single ended arena.

The best overall finals tube is likely to be the 2A3, so plan to have sufficiently efficient-enough speakers to use a 2A3.

There is a 2A3 amplifier that combines the positive features of Shindo, Wavac, and Kondo, yet easily surpasses them all, and .... it is made right in the USA. Livingston, Montana.

Just listen at length to the LATEST Serious Stereo 2A3 DC amps, IMHO, it doesn't get any better on this planet, in SE-land. $15,750 a pair shipped. Superb engineering and best possible musical performance is its hallmark.

I see "Socrates" has improved his write-up, but it's still a bit gee-whiz goofy. Maybe he is very young.

Ray,

Hey...almost everyone is "very young" compared to you and I. Hooray for the new generation of audiophiles!!

One thing, he was there to hear it all, and so was I. Its a shame you weren't able to experience it on Sunday at show's end (after the equipment / wiring settled-in some), cause you'd a liked its performance.

The deluxe Berkeley gear (both pieces) needed about two more weeks of break-in time than what it had on it at the show, but thats another story.

Look for some Manley Neo-Classic SE/PP 300b that you can find used from time to time at a very good price.
They put to shame lots of competitors. Deep controled bass even at zero dB feedback in SE mode, superb transparency, natural sounding...no "tubey" sound with these...

How does this Kurashima amplifier with EML 520 tubes sounds

You may be hard pressed to get an answer to that question here.

Kurashima is a fairly small operation with only a small number of units sold anywhere, even Japan.

As I say above, my 45 Kurashima with the right speakers is a great sounding amp for the money. Hard to say how this translates to the 520.

I have heard a 300B Kurashima. Sound is fair.

Circuit was/is : step down x'former to 6C6 cap-coupled to 300B.

I looked at the speakers you have, and I guess I can see why you have some power worries. I assume you have spoken to Lynn or Kevin and that's where your information comes from.

10W+ DHT (Not DIY) means a parallel 300B, or a single 845, GM70, or 211 per channel (but I actually don't know of a paralleled 300B that is sold commercially).

If your heart is not 100% set on DHT SET, I can heartily recommend the new AN (UK) OTO SE version which has double C core OPTs. (I forget the designations, but these are new amps). The power amp is the P1 SE (again with a new version name to indicate HiB or UHB OPTs). I promise you this is both a lively and natural sounding 10W SET (EL84s).

What about Class A DHT PP. You can get 10W easily from two 300B/channel in class A PP, more from Class AB (the amp easily can be designed to operate in class A most of the time) I promise you this will be lively! I have a KT88 based class A PP-triode with some big Lundahl OPTs and it is very lively. Problem here is that you have to go to a custom builder to get these.

It really depends on your speaker., posted on October 26, 2011 at 18:48:36
All of those amps paired with the wrong speaker will sound like crap. If you say "10wpc or more", that usually means that you are certain that the 8 watts a 300b would give you would not work at all. This says to me that you have an inefficient speaker with a lumpy impedance than needs a 100+ wpc SS amp. To get twice as loud as an 8 watt amp you need an 80 watt amp.

Start with the speaker. If you have a $50,000+ budget, you should be able to figure it out.

Cannot speak to this Amp directly. But scroll a few pictures down on the link for the Kurashima 25 watt SE.

http://tubesusa.com/toshi.html

My Kurashima 45 which comes well shy of 10 amps matched to Lowther-America Alerions with the DX65 driver has a very beautiful sound for the money.

Frankly, I think you ought to reconsider your wattage needs. My listening area is not big, but it is not a closet. I never power beyond half or so. The 45 cranks out more than enough pure detailed sound.

I agree with Mathew J. I have both a Kurashima 45 and a Kurashima 300b; both amps are superbly built and sound great. Unless you are in a very large room both the 45 and 300b provide plenty of sound pressure if driving efficient speakers. I have used them with all of the Klipsch heritage series: heresy, cornwall, la scala, and khorns with excellent results. I use the EML 45 solid plates and EML globe 45's with the smaller amp and EML 300b mesh plates with Kurashima 300b. If you are in a larger room, the 300b would be a better choice - and I would highy recommend the EML 300b mesh plates; especially if you like the kondo sound. Very nice, clean and detailed from top to bottom, and very fairly priced.

Phyto, even Fried had also recommended Toshi,s EML520 amplifier with 25 wpc output SET..Have you compared the sound of your amplifiers with any other make amplifier in your setup

I have compared the Kurashima 45 and 300b with several of my vintage amplifiers: Marantz 8b, McIntosh MC240 , McIntosh MC275 and a MC2205 SS. I have listen to several Audio Note amps at the local audio dealer using all Audio Note equipment (pre amp, power amps, TT, cable and speakers). The Kurashima amps are more detailed than any of my vintage amps but closer to the Marantz 8b than the McIntosh amps (these sound big and beefy) the Marantz 8B sound is lighter and more detailed. I like the Kurashima 300b better than the Audio Note Meishu I auditioned, but Audio Note has so many models that it hard to make any sweeping statements. If you need more power, I would talk with George Lenz at www.tubesusa.com about the Kurashima amp using the EML 520 V3 output tube. I use a Kurashima passive preamp using Western Electric input transformers with the Kurashima amps - very nice. I have found the EML tubes to be very durable; I have been using the EML solid plates in my Kurashima 45 for three years now and they still test great. I use my Kurashima amps daily - they get lots of use.
