When we were in college 30 years ago, YouTube didn't exist, so instructional videos on pumpkin carving were damn near impossible to find. We wanted to make our pumpkins fancy and artistic, but we didn't know WTF we were doing, and butchered them.

Nevertheless, while we mangled the pumpkins, music would be playing. That's how we got to discuss, for example, The Pretenders' "Never Do That." Just like we were unsure how to carve pumpkins, we were unsure about the meaning of "Never Do That." We thought it sounded like giving a failed relationship one more try, but ultimately, you'd nix and "never do that."

And of course, there was always the wannabe hippie coed who complained that "Never Do That" paled in comparison to "Back On The Chain Gang."

I always wanted to be a hippie even wore tie dye and bell bottoms in 5th grade in 1969. But by 1972 there were no hippies, if in fact there ever actually were such a thing, and saying "cool" was a sure sign of being uncool.

I agree with your mid/late 80s "hippie wannabe". Yet though I like most of the songs on Learning to Crawl (re:Back In the Chain Gang), it's a good record, IMO not one of those were good enough to even make it onto that stellar debut. The planets must have been in some kind of special alignment.

A tragedy indeed.
