When we were in college 30 years ago, YouTube didn't exist, so instructional videos on pumpkin carving were damn near impossible to find. We wanted to make our pumpkins fancy and artistic, but we didn't know WTF we were doing, and butchered them. Nevertheless, while we mangled the pumpkins, music would be playing. That's how we got to discuss, for example, The Pretenders' "Never Do That." Just like we were unsure how to carve pumpkins, we were unsure about the meaning of "Never Do That." We thought it sounded like giving a failed relationship one more try, but ultimately, you'd nix and "never do that." And of course, there was always the wannabe hippie coed who complained that "Never Do That" paled in comparison to "Back On The Chain Gang." -Lummy The Loch Monster |
