In the early-90s, we saw the East Bay's Vio-lence multiple times. We weren't yet 21, so older audiophiles laugh, that we had to use the 2-drink minimum on water or soft drinks.

30 years ago, Vio-lence's album, Oppressing The Masses showed that complete songwriting requires more than just riffs, no matter how good the riffs are. Check out "Engulfed By Flames," and judge for yourself. And of course, there was always a girl in a Calgary Flames jersey, whooping it up, to this song.

This is the actual CD I took with me to UncleStu52's Audio Directions Limited, in summer of 1990. Stu placed various materials between speaker stand and triangular (Spica?) bookshelf speaker. With "Engulfed By Flames" playing, you clearly heard what effects each cone, mat, and puck had.

The photo on the back cover was taken after the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The Embarcadero Freeway structure had not yet been torn down. Anyway, guitarist Robb Flynn had had enough of Vio-lence. He went on to greater fame and critical acclaim, after forming Machine Head.

Fall '88, we were still in high school. Because Vio-lence were from across the Bay, and played in local clubs, we saw them. Their guitar work outpaced the rest of the band.

After school one gray Friday afternoon, we were playing flag football. A boombox was playing Vio-lence's Eternal Nightmare. When "Phobophobia" played, one of our 5'1" nerd girls ditched her bookworm persona, totally disregarded the flag(s), ran faster than she ran after a city bus (if you missed a bus, you had to wait 15-20 minutes for the next one!), and tackled a dude! Forget the other audiophiles; in my book, that places "Phobophobia" in Chapter 1!
