cPlay

The open source high-end audio player using ASIO

May 2008

cPlay delivers high quality audio playback using ASIO 2. Playback is achieved using any ASIO compatible soundcard. cPlay is a minimalist audio player using the latest high quality SRC resampler (Best Sinc SNR 145.68db or 121.33db) or SoX (VHQ or HQ). cPlay's design offers state-of-the-art ASIO-only playback and caters for touch screen users. Installation, setup and use is easy. cPlay is built in c/c++ and operates on Windows XP SP2 Professional (32 bit).

FEATURES

  1. Resampling is sourced from LibSampleRate (version 0.1.5) and SoX 14.2.0 under GNU GPL license. LibSampleRate is aka SRC (Secret Rabbit Code) and supersedes the version as used in foobar2000. Best Sinc converter now offers a SNR of 145.68db or 121.33db (versus 97db). SoX VHQ offers better than 170db SNR. Resampling is bypassed when input rate matches output.

  2. Supports Steinberg's excellent ASIO 2 and is backward compatible to prior ASIO versions (as required by ASIO drivers).

  3. Offers high quality 64 bit double precision digital volume control (in 0.5db steps). This can be bypassed.

  4. Playback is achieved through .cue, .wav or .flac files. cPlay loads entire .wav or .flac (decoded) into RAM before starting. Playback is done directly from cPlay's internal buffer. Cue playback requires .cue files as created by EAC (single or multi file standard).

  5. Ensures efficient CPU resource utilization allowing for low specification processors or high levels of upsampling. This means CPUs can be underclocked / undervolted.

  6. Supports up to 3 ASIO soundcards with each having up to 100 output channels.

  7. Advanced optimizations are applied (if available from ASIO driver) during playback.

  8. Best results achieved when using cMP (i.e. cMP²). This allows for low level Windows optimizations. Use cMP release 1.0 final or later as this allows for bypassing RAM load in cMP (set RAM Load in cMP Settings to No) otherwise wav file is RAM loaded twice. cPlay allows for both svchost and lsass to be suspended during playback thus reducing the Windows footprint. Only exception is EMU's ASIO driver which requires both (svchost and lsass) to be operational. Set cMP's Optimize setting to Critical.

  9. Full remote control is achieved with cMP: offering volume control, track navigation, next/previous and stop/eject via (wireless) mouse.

USER MANUAL

Visit cMP² website (http://www.cicsMemoryPlayer.com) for more details and setup.

Screen Shot

GETTING STARTED

Download cPlay's installer here (1.3MB). Installation and startup is straight forward.

If you don't have an ASIO compatible soundcard, use ASIO4ALL. Note that ASIO4ALL does not support channel mapping (use default) and rarely handles above 48k sample rate.

Your feedback will help guide cPlay's future development. Source code (4.1MB) is available via email.

to settle on which mouse early on.

In my experience there is nothing you can do, especially now.

Consider starting over with the PS2.

To really go for broke once all is settled and BIOS optimized you can delete USB in BIOS!

Bought an exact model of the mouse I'm using to test it. No luck. Doesn't work. I presume we need to enable the HID service again to recognise it once. To do that, Services.msc needs to work, which again demands restoring files that support it..

all of the USB entries.

No polling worries after that!

I have tried it (at Grant's suggestion (cgwaudio)) and though subtle I thought it was worth the trouble.

Of course, it could make for pain in the event of a power failure! But without pain how can one call themselves an audiophile? As someone remarked at the beginning of the CD era how audiophiles would find a way to make playing CD's as inconvenient as playing LPs (properly) and I think we can say we have achieved this goal/prophesy. Exceeded it, actually!

Have you tried Serge's BIOS regimen?

certainly not seriously giving you a hard time! Far from it.

If I had written all of that stuff out there would be more missing than duplications.

You know you are due nothing but THANK YOUs for getting us all to think more about how our computers work.

The death of two dear dogs were very hard and few things were more painful than that. Only my Mother's death has followed me for longer and with greater sadness. As the story goes time is the healer AND it is hard to beat getting another cat to bring life back to normal. I do not think anything honors the memory of a loved pet more.

Nothing but good wishes for you.

I must share a surprising improvement in sound quality. I run USB from CMP machine to the DAC. Quite simply, I built an improved USB cable. Impact was as big as going from Step4 to 16. Litterally hearing stuff for the first time. Three features seemed contribute.
1. replaced standard wire with 2 runs of CATV twisted pair
2. made it very short 6"
3. shielded each of the 2 pairs with aluminum foil. This had big impact.

With this in place I attacked a short piece of I2S cable in the same manner. Positive impact but not on the same scale.

Clarity, sound stage, balance all significantly improved. Got inspired by the LessLoss site. They claim cable length and shielding very important on all digital signal lines before the DAC chip to reduce HF induced jitter. I think they are right.

How many of them are there really? I see a first tweak and then a tweak#2. However, #2 has, as had been usual, a list of items to remove. But then it had a bunch of screen shots showing the state of his system which resulted from far far more extensive deletions. He makes no comment about the screenshots. They seem to reflect the result of a third tweak pursued by eliminating whatever is not in the screenshots. Is that right? Is this the intention? Why is there a list first, then, if one is working by what is not there in the screenshots? Makes no sense.

Anyway, I did Jolida's batch for tweak #2 and then tried achieving the screenshots. I got close but avoided winsxs further deletions and a very few other items I feared removing. I eliminated all the folders not shown everywhere and all the dlls and drivers not shown. Still I got nowhere near down to 56.3MB for windows. It was more like 570MB. I did't see where there was 500MB left that isn't in the screemshots. Can someone explain this.

Worse, I could not boot up getting a ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt message even after replacing it twice (it had been there all along). Can anyone clarify, explain or assist? (I am back to step 16 plus M1 and M2list only for now and liking it.)

I personally do not use the screen shots because I cant d/l or want to pay to d/l. I think the screen shots are just a double check on the deletions. But anyway I did Steppes 1-20 plus My Tweaks 1 and 2 and I get down to about 80+ mb. I left all the .nls files and fonts because I had so much trouble with them initially. Are you sure its 570 and not 57 mb?

One more thing are you sure you're getting properties of Windows and not C drive? My c drive is still over 1 gb.If you are do a properties read on Windows and all its sub folders then a read on system32 and its drivers tell us how many files and how much mb?

Unfortunately right now I have overriden that with a copy of just before pursuing the screenshots. I do recall that I did properties on windows folder to get this number and on system32. The latter was around 275MB. I kept a copy so I can look thru it later again.

But why do steppe 17-20 then M1 and M2 if you can at step 16 just work from the screenshots by eliminating all not shown? Also, Mihaylov presented the screenshots as part of M2 (?) well before steppe came out with 17-21. That's what is puzzling, the sequence of offering them and how it should relate to the sequence of performing deletions and whether one is intended to do both the latter steppes and M tweaks or whether they are alternative methods. Please note, I am working on a Lenovo laptop not a custom cMP rig. The bios changes are not possible for me.

Also, I am hoping Jolida will do batch files for these last steppe steps.

I must confirm the riboge issue: me too can see about 250MB checking Windows folder.I'm not worried because sound is gorgeous but my curiosity is the same of riboge.
I've performed step 1-16 (plus XPlite) +jolida 1-2 + Mihaylov 1-2 ( with winsxs and .nls delections but fonts untouched.

Maybe I did not understand something but the Screenshots 2 shows the result of the package of the following tweaks have been applied to the classically optimized system cMP2: Steppe's 1 ... 16, tweak from here http://www.AudioAsylum.com/forums/pcaudio/messages/9/94530.html, XPLite Tweak, Jolida's 1 ... 2, My Tweak & My Tweak 2.

Where in that list of tweaks does it say to delete the entire Documents and Settings folder? Where does it say to delete all the folders under Windows except for those 5 in your windows screenshot? Etc, etc? I have once again done all the tweaks you list save for the list you surprisingly bring up from September before any of the Steppes and still windows folder is way over 1GB. The folder system32 in your screenshot has dozens and dozens fewer elements than result from the combined tweaks listed. I must really have missed something and remain no less confused.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm not surprised. I've found very few situations where a shorter connection wasn't better... most times markedly. And digitally-encoded music signals seems to be even moreso in this regard.

There's a lot of blather about USB cables on the PC Audio Asylum. I posted this response to one thread... the experience related there was very similar to yours:

Hey Riboge,
As I had mentioned earlier in a post last week, I started from the Original cMp, implementing the lists using my batch files in the following order:-

Original cMp
Steppe 2
Steppe 3
Steppe 4
Jolida 1
Jolida 2
Steppe 5
Steppe 6 ( omitting xplite )
Steppe 7
Steppe 8
Steppe 9
Steppe 10
Steppe 11
Steppe 12
Steppe 13
Steppe 14
Steppe 15
Steppe 16
Mihaylov's September list
Mihaylov's My Tweak
Mihaylov's Tweak 2
- - took a back up here - -
Screenshot 1
- - took a back up here - -
Screenshot 2
- - took a back up here - -
The size of the 'C' drive came down to about 68 mb here.
So just to check further, I tried Bold Fortunes batches here from it's Part 2 to Part 10.
Now the size of my 'C' drive is close to 58 mb after all the above done...
I took back ups at the above mentioned places because each of them changed the flavour of the sound from Airy to Mellow to Dynamic. So I felt its best to determine which suits best after completing the deletions & analyse them carefully with peace of mind.
It's important to do the Bold Fortunes sets with care. Especially in it's Part 5, where I did not run the Win_SxS batch, & in it's Part 10, where I had to edit his batch there, so as to NOT remove the System Folder. The Part 10 has a batch which removes the System folder, but we need it in our case where it contains winspool.drv & mouse.drv...

What are screenshots 1 and 2? I see several screenshots shown and linked to in Mihaylov's tweaks #2 posting. Is this screenshots 2? You seem to take them as an implicit further tweak while others say they just show what resulted from all the steps to that point.

There are screenshots posted earlier after M's first tweak about what is shown in process explorer with cMP running. Are you calling these screenshots 1? These are shown to explain adding back the list of files listed above them not as a step of further deletions to make.

Where is it recommended to eliminate Documents and settings altogether and all the folders but 5 in windows?

Can one do the whole thing by simply starting with full cMP and reproducing screenshots 2 all at once by deleting or cutting everything not shown? If not, why not? How can the sequence matter if this is where you end up regardless?

Ooh la la. Now u r confusing me :)
Mihaylov... Please post the link to Ur screenshots once again. Both were uploaded by him to Rapidshare. Let alone all steppes, the final list of files PRESENT after all deletions in the system, is what is shown in the screenshot. It makes things a lot easier that way. All u have to do, is take a printout & go to the respective folder, drag the files that are present in his screenshot to one corner in a folder, & highlight & delete ALL others remaining. It's way easier that way because the list of files to be retained is much smaller than the one to be deleted...

Those are the ones with his second tweak. What is the other set of screenshots, since you list a 1 and a 2? I did the procedure you describe and ended unable to boot with error stating that ntfs.sys was missing or corrupt even though it was present. Can one do this right from the start and skip all the step by steps? Any idea why I got the unbootable error?

I was using the Jolida batch file for your tweak which does not deal with the folder deletions you listed. Now it makes sense to me at last.

I still wonder whether one can do it all from the start at once now that we know the end point. When I tried after 16 steps and the batches for your tweaks I couldn't boot up but got ntfs.sys missing when it wasn't.

Oh yes. Absolutely !! It's way easier isn't it?? No matter on which steppe Ur system presently is in, u can follow this procedure & finish in no time. Just printout the screenshots, drag the contents present in it to one corner of a folder, & highlight-delete all others.
Please note that my system needed a few more files present in his screenshot, to boot or work flawlessly. They were a few more fonts, & sys files that I had to keep to make windows boot, Juli@ to work, & start in cMp mode...
U delete one wrong font, & windows will not boot....

Try to execute My Tweaks manually and gradually deleting folders and files (by groups) to define that file or a folder after which removal system it ceases to be loaded (if the such occurs to be).

I eliminated windows folders not shown>okay. Then, I eliminated folders from system32>okay. Then I eliminated the drivers not shown in drivers folder>no boot saying isapnp.sys was missing. I replaced that then no boot saying ntfs.sys missing. I am stuck here trying to identify which driver(s) must be replaced--no obvious choices. Suggestions?

Btw, I never had LtcycfgWMp.sys or mv2.sys or rtenicxp.sys

At this point windows is 315MB

- Here the screenshot of the Driver folder in my OS (from package "Screenshots 2"):

As it is possible to see the file isapnp.sys is present (is shown!). Tell me please why you moved it and where?
The file ntfs.sys is shown too.

= Btw, I never had LtcycfgWMp.sys or mv2.sys or rtenicxp.sys =
- Because you do not use the network configuration of cMP2. LtcycfgWMp.sys is driver for PCI Latency Tool, mv2.sys is driver for UVNC server and rtenicxp.sys is Realtek network driver.

Show the screenshot of your Drivers folder after elimination because I cannot understand in any way that you delete and that you leave.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I removed isapnp.sys by mistake then returned it. ntfs.sys was present all along despite the error message. When I returned all the drivers it worked again, so I need to identify which driver removal of those not shown caused the problem. It is not one you listed to stay.

I do in fact use the network configuration of cMP but not the latency tool or a Realtek network driver. Mine is Intel on my Lenovo laptop.

Later I did the removal of files from system32 and again couldn't complete booting getting an "error c0000135 unable to locate component, application cannot find winsrv" despite winsrv.dll being still present. I returned first the .exe files>no improvement. Then I returned the .sys and .nls files>no error but boot stalled after showing the usual windowsxp screen with progress bar. Only when I returned the .dlls did full boot get restored. So, in toto, I need to find a driver in the driver folder and a .dll in the system32 folder that I have to keep in addition to what your screenshots show...apparently.

In my system the contents of the winsxs folder are entirely different from what you show, that is, none of the ones you have in your screenshot are in my winsxs at any point.

Can you gentlemen please post a list of WinSxs files and folders that you leave in the Windows folder? This is the only place where (plus the .nls's) where I have not had much luck eliminating stuff. I did some then tried to do some more and got a no boot. Before I try again I'd like a little direction from you guys. Also jolida I know you left some of this in for sonic reasons. Can you tell if it was all or some and if some which ones did you leave?

Well. Now as you have understood you have to find the necessary dll and sys. This is what I was doing when I was searching for files that can be removed. The easiest way to do it by successive bisection: return first half of all deleted files dll and check the system boot. If the system does not boot then remove this half and return the second half. If your system boots then again remove half of the recovered files and check the system boot, etc.

Thanks for posting ling to these pics Greg. I had forgotten about Peter's post. It was infact his work that inspired me initially to build my own usb cable. I was running something about a foot long. The initial change this week was to shield the power pair separately from the signal pair with ordinary kitchen tin foil. Shocking improvement. Next I took it down to < 6". Modest improvement. I think as a result the deal is to reduce HF induced jitter. The lessloss guys are building stacks of chips direct to chips to eliminate cable all together. much as Peter does with his clock/2706/1543/cap stack on his latest dac experiments. These pics reminded me that I should eliminate the connector at the dac end and just leave one to connect to the PC.

Another change that brought crazy improvement was eliminating even the 3 or 4 mm of leads on caps by going to surface mount polymer decoupling caps directly on the legs of the 1541 dac chip per ecdesign. I think every mm counts in digitally induced jitter on signal path.

Antenna length is only about an inch in the 2.4 ghz wifi band. We all have 5.8ghz cordless phones around our rigs. Even shorter antenna. All this stuff is injecting substantial jitter into our highly exposed cmp systems. I have now proven that even wrapping the digital signal wires in a little foil make a difference if you cannot eliminate them all together.
I2S is better than other signal transports because it carries separate clock signals. Still shield it from the antenna factor.

I have decided to not use XPLite since it did not get along well with my nLite install so I am wondering if the above files are removed by IT since we have not had these on any of the lists of files to remove.

They seem useless for our purposes.

Just curious.

It would seem that XPLite is superfluous especially with screeenshots showing up.

Has anyone compiled a list of files the XPLite is removing?

Thanks,

Hello, everybody. This is tweaks part 22 and I hope the last part. First, let me thank Serge Mihaylov for finding *.nls files that are safe to remove and for suggesting the basic trick of the last tweak. Also Great thanks to Theo for reg.exe file
It goes Like that:
Restore all files necessary to start cmp from reboot and to shut down windows from cmp. Their list + shutdown.exe and reg.exe are found in Serge Mihaylov’s answer to my plea for help. Set Your cmp to start cmp.
Next reboot your computer from another (untweaked) windows and remove *.nls files EXEPT 1252.nls (Theo, checkit!).
Make sure that cmp windows works and cmp starts and shuts down normally.
Once again reboot into untweaked windows and remove:
From windows root – EVERYTHING, even explorer.exe. Leave only 3 folders: FONTS, SYSTEM and SYSTEM32
Folder Fonts should contain for original US version of windows these files: 8514fix.fon, 8514oem.fon, 8514sys.fon and vgaoem.fon and ttf fonts: arial.ttf, l_10646.ttf, marlett.ttf and micross.ttf. If you have there desktop.ini file, DO NOT TOUCH IT
Folder System should contain only MOUSE.DRV.
Remove as per Serge Mihaylov’s recommendation CatRoot and CatRoot2 folders from System32, folder WinSxS completely. Remove Microsoft\Protect\User folder, Temp folder, pchealth, resources. Leave only 3 folders: Fonts, system and system32. Inside system 32 3 folders should remain: config, drivers (36 files left), DRVSTORE (created by Lynx. Don’t know if you have it).
Remove these files: (Every single one is a jewel and all make great improvement)
Explorer.exe, sethc.exe, userinit.exe, apphelp.dll, browseui.dll, cfgmgr32.dll, crypt32.dll, cryptui.dll, imagehlp.dll, iphlpapi.dll, msports.dll, msv1_0.dll, rpcss.dll, setupapi.dll, shdocvw.dll, srvsvc.dll, uxtheme.dll, vdmdbg.dll, version.dll, wininet.dll, wintrust.dll, vga.drv, acpiec.sys, dmboot.sys, dmio.sys, dmload.sys, enum1394.sys, fs_rec.sys, imapi.sys, mcd.sys, udfs.sys, eula.txt. PLEASE NOTE, that as I use mouse, I have left several hid*.sys usb*.sys and mouhid*.sys files, that Serge recommends to remove.
After that the size of my Windows folder is 49.7 mb. System32 contains 80 files, of them 49 dll, 11 exe, 13 nls files and fntcache.dat, wdmaud.drv, winspool.drv, watchdog.sys, win32k.sys, config.tmp.
After this comes the MOST IMPORTANT PART:
Open your cmp boot.ini file with a notepad and add /nopae and /noguiboot, next remove from windows\system32\ logonui.exe. Reboot and be prepared for surprises!
NOTE 1 Your cmp should be set to start cmp, not xp.
Note 2 Your cmp boot.ini file should read like this:
after windows xp professional
/noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect /timeres=9800 /nodebug /pcilock /nopae /noguiboot
Have fun!
Some of you, inmates may still remember the discussion about /nopae key in boot.inni. It was agreed, and I advocated as well, that this option brings harshness to the sound. It was, but not now with the mids so clean. The /nopae option will bring more meat to the highier mids and to cymbals. (IMHO) Certainly, /nopae is optional, while /noguiboot is a must. Don't forget to remove logonui.exe. It in itself is worth a minlogon.
Funny Thing: removing explorer.exe allows to remove SHELL32.dll. Just imagine the possible improvement after removal of this memory residing monster. CMP won’t load without it, alas. It starts, but fails to load… Removing shell32 and winspool.drv would be a great achievement!
That is all, inmates.
Serge.
P.S. Sorry, if it took too long and if it was so troublesome.
P.P.S. I have a 4-step Big and Important registry tweak from part 12-15 period, which I have forgotten to post and a trick with ipsecurity and services that is to be done at the Cics’ part of windows tweaking. Will post it, if anybody is interested. Also, as I have rebuilt my cmp with my tweaks 5 times, I have a certain when-to order of things that can be helpful for those who start from scratch. Tell me if it is interesting.
ONE MORE PLEA FOR HELP: Folks, there had been a discussion concerning hipet and timeres=97?? option in boot.ini. Would experiment with it, but please, post THE EXACT syntax...

You said

'...After this comes the MOST IMPORTANT PART:

I just cant resist this tease. You should be in advertising.

Now since this last tweak requires one to be in cmp mode I restored some files from the mihaylov tweak posts and your notes above
'...Their list + shutdown.exe and reg.exe...' then rebooted but it still boots in xp (which it should not). So simply stated do you (or does anyone) know what files may be missing from my xp?

Also once in cmp mode it should be possible to delete these files from the EXPLORE button in cmp? I cant get this mode either so I conclude I am not really in cmp mode.

Anyway great post I'm just hoping I can get there.

edit: I think it was Rick who recommended reg.exe restoration. but I did recommend the shutdown.exe deletion.

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how to set these parameters in Win 7 (assuming they yield SQ improvement of course)?
Thanks

Hi (steppe) Serge

Thanks so much for the "endless" research and effort to make the most of software tweaking for cMP. By now there are so many chapters in the story (with LOTS of duplicate files listed) that it may be time to consolidate The Steppe Method into a single, optimized Path to The Mermaid's Tail.

Since you have rebuilt your cMP FIVE TIMES (yikes !), you must have a "big bang" recipe that can be used on the Classic cMP (as prescribed by cics on the website) - one that does all the right things, and avoids the pitfalls that break cMP. Please consider a new, "Complete, All-in-One" post.

And YES... please list and reveal ALL the reg tweaks we need to reach The Mermaid's Tail.

Am I correct thinking you've abandoned the "cPlay without cMP is best SQ" position... and therefore that part of STEPPE_16 should be ignored ?

Thanks again for leading the way.
Cheers,
Grant

/NOGUIBOOT - Forbids VGA-driver usage at a stage of loading of OS - thus the Windows splash screen will not be displayed and at failures dark blue screens BSOD will not be displayed also. And how it can influence SQ?

/NOPAE - Forbids usage PAE on systems with ram more than 4Гб supporting PAE. Somebody here uses more than 4 GB ram?

I have a question about the Registration deletion from My Tweak then the restoring of R000000000007.clb (into folder Registration) My Tweak Corrected. Somewhere I lost this file but can retrieve from another pc. Do you think this would work?

I'm thinking maybe I need to restore this to get back into cmp mode. I never worried about it until Steppe 22 since my cplay worked ok without it.

I don't know. R000000000007.clb is used by cPlay. But cPlay works w/o it.

...an editable text file is much more so.

Thank you Junaid for all the hard work (and critical listening) you've contributed to the Software Tweaking Quest... it's helped many of us save hours of tedious effort.

While the screenshot approach to defining "what's left" has a certain visual familiarity, it is not that easy to use for a checklist. May I suggest an easy way to generate text lists for each of the relevant Windows folders: simply make a DIRectory listing of each folder (from the Command Line window) and save the result to an appropriately named ".txt" file. Zip up the text files, and they become a neat package defining what files you have left in your cMP system.

Open a command window in the folder you want to list and enter this command:
DIR /a > "descriptive file name.txt"
and hit ENTER.

The pipe command (ie: the ">" symbol, followed by a file name) redirects the screen output to your text file. You will get the file written into the same folder as the one you are listing, unless you give it a fully qualified pathname within the quotes.

To get a listing with filenames only (omitting any other information), add the "/b" switch to the command, like this:
DIR /a /b > "C:\Windows\another descriptive name.txt"

For a complete list of switches, type "help DIR" at the command prompt.

I hope this is useful... and Thanks again.
Cheers,
Grant

I'm back in the cmp saddle again. But (and remember I still have explorer.exe still in ) the explore button does not work. So there goes my idea of adding new music and/or deleting/adding back files via this method.

This one can be copied since it is not a screenshot.

My system uses a PS/2 mouse so I was able to get rid of the USB files.

I have added disabling all USB ports in BIOS for the extreme setting. It does make a difference. PS/2 is the way to go.

My folders are as Serge prescribed. I am just over 50mB for WINDOWS.

I would appreciate any suggestion of additional files to delete! I know there are some I need to get rid of such as the eegosys.ico. In time I will. In the "perf" series I suspect there are some here that are unneeded. As the week goes by I will see what I can delete.

Does anyone know of a way to work with the registry with the SDD attached to another machine? That would be a great thing if it is possible. The thought of having to reinsert files for this ... But if must be done!

I would have thought when we setup our cMP with the initial optimizations that we would have eliminated the page file. Did it come back due to our file deletions? Is it worth worrying about?

Hope someone finds this useful.

to insert any component easily especially a CD player.

Doesn't matter to me. I have no intention of returning to the CD PLAYER so it is a moot point for me.

I suspect we are approaching a sound quality as good as any CD player of comparable expense. At this level of performance I think the differences are subject to various compromises. Some may prefer another set of distortions. Perfection is not possible so, one way or the other, you learn to live with shortcomings no matter what the primary source may be.

I prefer working with the limitations of any one component by adjusting the system. Who knows the source of anomalies within the system? If it is easier to adjust the tonal balance with your speaker's crossover I will do it there. Who knows which one was absolutely correct before adjusting? It is a puzzle and will remain so.

I was doing great sonically with the 1st part all the way up to

'.....Remove these files(Every single one is a jewel and all make great improvement)
Explorer.exe, sethc.exe...' and it was very good.

After that I did all the deletes and sonics were a little sharper therafter. Not real sharp but subtly sharp. Then I did the noguiboot switch in boot.ini and things got better. Probably still not as good as 1st part above but close.

I have a modified Oppo 870 that outputs digital streams from 44 - 88khz sample rate. I bought it 4 years ago to be able to get to my single layer sacd's (ie,. no cd layer) and cmp beats it handily when compared to files converted to 16/44 off the analogue outs of the Oppo. Ccmp sounds better with files via ripped cd layers off my dual layer sacds versus 88khz out to my Buf32s dac (which is fed by cmp as well so good apples to apples comparison).

Anecdotelly via memory, cmp sounds way better than my heavily modded SCD1 which is now sold.

I did not use XPLite on my current OS. I bought a copy but there was something about it I did not like. I may have been overly influenced by BOLD FORTUNE. Who knows?

Now I wonder just what it does.

Does it simply delete files or does it also make registry changes? Anyone know?

I found a program that allows one to modify the registry on your music computer HDD from another computer. I will lost a link later. It is at home.

Ready for Serge's latest registry changes!!! I think ...

Add to your cmpEXtreme bios disabling the all of the USB. Yes, you have to short the pins to restart but if gives you the screen with the BIOS choices so it not that big a deal to restart.

Bye,

Yes I tried leaving usb in but it hung up on boot so I disabled all usb in bios and it booted fine. I have stuff in system 32 and drivers that you dont. But as I recall juli@ would not work w/o setupapi and prodspec and pschdprf but that was in xp. Maybe its different in cmp mode. You dont use moushid and your ps/2 mouse works? If so maybe I'll try. Also you dont use lanmandrv and I do. There are about 6-8 others but I cant remember their names now. Did you try the nopae boot.ini changes
? That is only one I have not done. Also I deleted all the files I put back in to make cut&paste from a thumb drive work. Does not make sense to leave in that stuff since I cant get back to xp anyway. I guess I'll load new music to the hd directly or by reloading my last good xp image via Snapshot.

After getting used to the sonics I really like it now.

Hi Rick!
You can edit the registry from the shell cMP if temporarily return the four files: regedit.exe, aclui.dll, ulib.dll and clb.dll. You must also edit the line "TOUCH_SCREEN..." in the file cicsMemoryPlayer.pth to the prescribing there path to regedit.exe.

My cMP2: Windows XP SP2 Ru, GA-H55M-UD2H, i3-530, Corsair CM3X160C9DHX 1GB, system drive - Transcend IDE FLASH MODULE TS2GDOM40V-S FAT32, ESI Juli@, full linear PSU, NAS - WD My Book Live

since I did not use XPLite.

I did on a previous build and had problems which I blamed on it.

Wondering if I may have a cluttered registry AND if XPLite would have made a difference there. Does it do more than just delete files and remove stuff from the registry? I have looked and this is not made clear at their website.

Found a neat thing that allows reg changes from the HDD/SDD without all of that returning of files.

I will post the link to it.

Thanks,

as far as files differences.

I need to take a new SNAPSHOT and that will be a good time to re-check my work.

Yes, I do think cMP ONLY has changed everything. Most for better but certainly a bit of a negative for convenience. If we wanted convenience we would have left all of this alone. But once you hear what this can do it is an easy compromise to make.

I did make the changes to boot.ini. I have not made any comparisons between the "new" one and the old one. I do know I am very pleased with where this is going.

I have found something that allows changing registry entries on the cMP HDD from another computer.

Thanks, again,

You inspired me to go all the way.
I followed your path to steppe7. Then did the complete Bold Fortune. Really like the sound at that stage. Took a system image after ever step so comparison is easy.
Then went up to steppe10. Took a defrag while I still could. Then applied 11 thru 16 (just the first safe part). Started & restarted CMP and then applied the 3 Mihaylov lists file deletions from exporer within cmp. I forgot to do the folder deletions (will try that in future) Also from explorer entered Autoruns and deleted each and ever registry entry that had file not found.
Then reboot back into cmp.
Music very good. Have not had time for serious assessment, but after 30 mins it is clear it is in another league.
Thanks for your batch files and the inspiration.

I keep a CD Player handy for when I seriously break my DAC.
The CDP is a highly modified Sony with a nicely done Tube Lampizator output stage with 6n6p tubes (as popularized by BAT). Lots of power supply mods with tons of OSCON SEPC. Certainly orders of magnitude better than stock.

When I plug in CMP2 on a 1541a based superdac, no comparison. CMP pushed the CDP aside. Way better clarity, sound stage and sense of reality. There is texture in instruments. The thing I am noticing more now is the sense of life in singers. The breathing between notes is just becoming spooky. None of this feels real on the CDP.

Inmates, who have passed all Steppes including Mihaylov's lists, may not have access to their Registry to make further changes onto it. To do the same at this stage, we are left with Two options...
The First option is to attach ur Hard Disk to another Windows computer via eSata or USB or whatever, & access the registry by this method:-
If you put the drive from machine (A) into another machine (B) you can use the regedit on machine (B) to access the hive files

Simply run Regedit select the HKLM key and from the "file" menu you should see an option to load hive.

Browse to the desired hive on the hard-drive you connected (ensure that you have access to where the hives are stored, for XP it will be in the "windows\system32\config" directory...

The Second method, is quite the same, but does not need another pc. Instead we create a Bootable Windows Image on a CD & boot to it from the Start-up. The procedure is listed below...

Make sure that your system has about 500MB of free disk space!

Download the latest PE Builder version (self-installing package) and install it. Link:-
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download

Start PE Builder (pebuilder.exe). When you start PE Builder for the first time it will ask if you agree with the license agreement.

Now PE Builder will ask to search for windows installation files. If you don't have your windows XP setup/installation files on your system you must insert the original Microsoft Windows XP installation/setup CD at this point.
The files you have at c:\windows are not installation files. They are your already installed files!
Click "yes" to start searching. PE Builder will now search all fixed- and CD-Rom drives for Windows installation files. This will take some time. When more than one valid location is found, a dialog will appear where you can select which location you want to use.

At the main PE Builder dialog, select the "Burn to CD/DVD" option. When you are using an erasable medium, make sure that the "AutoErase RW" option is enabled. The "burn using" option should be set to "StarBurn". Select your CD writer device from the Device list.

Hit the "build" button. PE Builder will now ask you to create a BartPE directory, answer with "yes".

The license for your Microsoft Windows XP product is shown. Read it and agree to it to continue.

PE Builder will now start building BartPE. This will take a few minutes.
You will see a lot of files getting copied and/or decompressed, the ISO image build and the data recorded to your CD/DVD writer.
If the data verify was correct and there where no errors reported you can boot the CD/DVD!

1.Insert the BartPE CD into the drive, and boot the system from the CD. Once the file loading phase is over, the Bart PE desktop will be visible, as shown in Figure 1.
2.Type Regedit.exe in the prompt, and press Enter. Select the HKEY_USERS hive
3.From the File menu, choose the Load Hive option. Browse to your Windows installation drive, for example the following location:

C:\Windows\System32\Config\
4.Select the file named SOFTWARE (the file without any extensions), and click Open
5.Type a name for the hive that you've loaded now. (Example: MyXPHive)
6.Now the SOFTWARE hive is loaded, and present under the HKEY_USERS base hive.
7.After entering the correct data, you MUST unload the Hive. To do so, select MyXPHive branch, and then in the File menu, choose Unload Hive. It's important to note that you'll need to select the MyXPHive branch first, before unloading it.

Another advantage of creating the Bootable CD, apart from using it to make changes to the Registry, is to make use of the USB functionality which some of us lost in the deletion process. As we would be requiring the Thumb drive to transfer music onto the HDD, it can easily be done by booting to this version of Windows (via the Bootable CD)....

Could you please clarify:

-- does USB still works after all the deletions, and
-- any Registry changes after all the file deletions; and if yes, how to do them.

NO to both. I have deleted all the necessary files for the above to work. I can use a USB mouse though, but not a pen drive. Also Registry access is possible only by following the two methods I posted yesterday. Refer to my post "REGISTRY ACCESS" for info...

I think you had misunderstood my second question. I mean this:

-- if I had done all the deletion per your screen shots, do I have to do any corresponding Registry changes? and how do I do them?

Followup question to my previous question 1:

-- What files do I need to retain for USB to work (I have a USB dac)

As to my current status, I am happily listening to 4.6 (steppe 4 + jolida 1 & 2). But your screen shots prompted me to may be try tweaking again. If I can do everything in one step, then it is worth the effort.

My screenshot is the result of steppes 2 to 16, along with two of my (Jolida's) lists, three lists of Mihaylov, Mihaylov's two screenshots & BF step 2 to 10...
I did all the above in about half n hour using my batch files, which includes registry as well...
USB is quite tricky. If u wanna play safe, then I suggest u run each Batch, then re-boot to check it's functionality. This way, u could pin down the list which may eat-up Ur USB driver.
The screenshots have no separate registry mods to be made. I hope I have sent u the batch files for all the above including the registry....
Always take a back-up of a stage which suits Ur taste... And always revert to that back up again later, to re-check if the mods done thereafter were worth it..

Hi jolida,

No, I hadn't requested for your batch files previously. May be I would this time, in the case that I would go forward with it. I would if I am sure about the USB issue.

My impression is that not every step brings an improvement, at least not so from step 4.6 to steppe 8, which was as far as I went before I abandoned the whole thing.

- It's not so. logonui.exe is removed perfectly without nogui in boot.ini. (See My Tweak). Probably because logonui.exe it is not logongui.exe.

I have my music computer SDD attached to the "other" computer with the GRANITE USB adaptor, since otherwise my machine will not boot with the drive attached to a SATA port.

I thought I had tried this before and could not get it to "LOAD HIVE". The choice is not offered at all. You can see the shadow, but that is all.

I tried playing with that thing I sent out. It does not allow you to delete. You can change values (I guess) in the right panel but I have no idea what I am doing with that.

I am starting to think that if Serge's new changes are extensive it might be best to stat over. I am already thinking of better ways to get where I am.

Also, are you really able to boot your music computer with gdi32.dll deleted?

Finally got to the end almost. There's probably a few straggler files I need to delete and I haven't tried nopae yet but whoa is this good. I finally deleted many of the files I was maintaining for sonic reasons just to try and I now believe they should stay out for sonic reasons. The major impact is a total richness to the sound, super clarity with no edge to the sound. As many of you know I have electrostatic speakers and had to update the panels a few months ago. New panels have more clarity than prior panels but because I cross them over @ 100 hz (which I now know was too low) I kept getting certain frequencies that would subtly zzz or buzz. Today I moved the x-over to a higher value (160-200 hz..not settled yet) and it snapped the highs into focus and solved my zzz problem. Once I settled on a higher volume for my mid bass drivers it filled the lower midbass suckout that resulted from lifting the panel crossover. I have always overlapped the panels and mid bass to get the tone right but not now. I cannot say enough good things about the highs from the CMP^2 all Stepped and Mihayloved out. It is precise, it images, it is smooth it is wonderful ...well done brother Serge's and major subcontractors like Jolida and Ryelands.

I have changed directions many times in set up. 1st it was 192 src, then 192 sox, a brief interlude at 96 sox, then finally back to 44. I used to detest cmp mode because I could not consistently get in, never knew if I was really in, so when Steppe 16 dumped cmp mode I was relieved. Not now I am fully commited to CMP mode. I have relinquished all my usb/thumb drive funtionality so getting new music will have to be via extraction of hd, filling up hd with files/cues and replacing hd back into CMP computer. A big pain in the a** but I will not ever get rid of these sonics. I cannot overstate how good this CMP^2 all Stepped out sounds. Best front end I have ever had.

Now for my question what register changes do we still have to make? Can we still do the autoruns thing for missing files? Did Steppe ever post his registry tricks?

Rick,
Im sure u have made some mistake here. The procedure is very simple & i myself have done it. I guess u quite dint understand it properly. Let me explain in a straightforward manner...

With ur SSD attached to the 'other' computer, in any which way (it does'nt matter), it would show up in its "My Computer" as say 'E' drive.
All u have to do is click 'Start'>'Run'> regedit..
Now u will have the registry editor open. In case u have any tree open, collapse all of them. Now here comes the tricky part...
Just click on HKEY_USERS once so its just selected. NOW go to File menu, & u will have the "Load Hive" option available. Click on it & browse to the Config Folder of ur SSD ( which in this case would be E:\Windows\System32\Config). And from it, select 'software' by double-clicking on it. Now it will ask u to assign a name for this Temporary tree u are creating under the HKEY_USERS. Name it something like 'Rick'.
Now under this Rick tree, u will have access to the Registry of ur SSD. After making any changes whatsoever, remember to UNLOAD the Hive by Just clicking on the 'Rick' & from the File menu, select Unload Hive..

You're Done...!!

Then turn off all USB stuff in BIOS.

I hear an improvement.

Of course, one must start with a PS/2 mouse to do this.
