I've had this LG OLED TV for about 6 months now and a few weeks ago, when I was watching Netflix, I lost my internet connection on the TV. I have an Ethernet Wire going to it. - No wireless used.

So, I tried powering off the TV and it still would not connect to my Internet. All of my other Network Devices had internet. So, I removed the power from the TV Completely by powering it off at the plug. When I turned the TV back on it immediately connected just fine and I resumed watching the Flick.

This event started occurring on a much more regular basis, with the exact same results. I have to remove power from the TV at the plug, to get it to connect again. Finally after having the TV disconnect the internet twice within the span of an hour, I connected the TV Wirelessly with no Problems. And I did not have to remove the power from the TV.

Now I just replaced the Ethernet Cable to see of that might be the problem (I doubt it, but I have to try - It would seem to me that having to power off the TV at the plug, to get it to connect again with Ethernet points to a TV Problem.). I have also contacted LG briefly to see if someone else had reported this problem - They said no.

Anything I'm overlooking?

Be sure your anti-virus program has the TV's IP address as a safe/allowed connection.

I have not used anti-Virus programs in over 15 years .........., posted on September 27, 2020 at 08:39:05

I find them worse than any Virus I've fixed (Have not had a Virus in about 7 years- Windows 10 does a better job blocking them)...

I did variations on a Google search for "LG OLED TV Ethernet problems" and came up with some hits. Try different searches like "LG TV Ethernet problems".

Have you tried resetting the TV to factory defaults, update to the latest firmware, power cycle. Then see how it behaves?

Oh, I just read about doing a cold reboot by holding the Power Button for 30-seconds. However, I'm not sure which exact LG models this applies to.

The very first hit on your search seems to be exactly what I'm experiencing. I tried a search and just came up with wireless problems... But yours worked!

I'll give this a shot over the next few days and let you know how it goes.
Thanks Again!

I also read something about doing a cold boot by holding the Power Button for 30-sec.

The cold Boot appeared to work that day, but the Problem (Not Connected to the internet via Ethernet) returned the next day.

So, I decided to do a Factory Reset of the TV and that has worked for a few days without fail. So, it is a Software Problem with the TV. It did work fine for about 6 months, so the problem may return. But at least I know that a Factory Reset will get it going again.

Good to know that the factory reset seems to help but as you know, it shouldn't be happening at all. I wonder if there's a firmware update, or if one is being developed. Might be worth checking every few months.

Yes, I get software updates about every couple weeks. (I have mine on Automatic, so I get notified at least once a month)... I did report my problem and the Factory Reset 'Fix' to LG as a Software Problem. They might fix it, and I'll probably never know. And in a few years, I'll get another TV anyway.

As I looked over the search you did and see the exact same problem that I have. I had asked Customer Service at LG and of course they were clueless. I let you know if the problem goes away for good.

Thanks Again!

I've had TV's 'stall' on downloading updates exhibit connection problems

try checking firmware updates on the LG ... the last time I experienced similar behavior there was a 'EULA' window / prompt from the cable provider that didn't come up until the update was complete and the connection was hinkey until I ticked the 'agree' box ... that's my theory anyway because things straightened out afterwards

also, cycle your modem / router just in case

edit: Fred's been there too I see

regards,

You can get more information about the problem by logging into your router and viewing devices the next time you experience the problem. Another thing to try, is to unplug and plug back in the CAT cable at either the TV or the router end and plugging it back in, to see if it reconnects. If it does reconnect, you might want to try updating router firmware.

Thanks for your reply... A little more information......

Not only have I unplugged the Ethernet Cable and Plugged it back it in. I have actually replaced the cable and the TV did not reconnect, until I removed power from the TV at the Plug. Turning the power of the TV off and back on, did not reconnect it.

I even let it sit overnight with the power off, and it still would not re-connect, until I removed power from the plug itself. And this was with a Completely new Ethernet Cable.

This is the first TV I had do this in this exact space.

turn your attention to the modem / router ... you've made no mention of it

cycle that on / off, then log into it as Fred indicated

then look at firmware updates on the TV

regards,

Yes, I have searched for Firmware upgrades on the Router. Have Re-booted it.... And yes, I can log in and see the Wired TV Connection. And I just checked the TV for updates again, and there are none.

And of course I can connect to the router Wirelessly from the TV and have no problems. (Which may be the solution that I choose in the end).

And since this is an intermittent problem, it is going to be very hard to pin down. I can stream Netflix or Amazon just fine for an hour or so, and then I can lose internet connection.

"And yes, I can log in and see the Wired TV Connection." Sometime, when the problem occurs and you aren't going to watch TV for a while, leave it like that and check the router connection status again. There are some pretty long timeouts. You should also be able to see the IP address, try to ping it from another device when it drops the connection. You could also try to disable V6 Internet protocol and force it to V4, but it is really a long shot.

If you have a different router available to you, it would be interesting to try it. It does sound like it is a TV problem, but that doesn't necessarily mean that changing something else wouldn't correct it. I'm saying this because this should have shown up under LG testing, so with some configuration the wired connection was probably reliable for them when they tested it.

a few more ideas .. .

using a hub with the router?

is there more than one 'jack' to try on the router? mine has two

who owns it and can you swap it for another?

also ... if you checked firmware updates is there one 'close' to the problem and will the TV system allow rollbacks of updates?

if you were to do a search about firmware updates on LG's causing problems you'll get a lot of hits ... at least I did when I sorted mine out

good luck!

If other items on your network are not experiencing Ethernet problems like your TV, the problem is not likely to be your router. The problem points to your TV.... especially with your description that power cycling the TV reestablishes the Ethernet connectivity, at least until it disconnects and you have to do the power cycle ritual again.
