 Well, it's not really new.

I cleared much of the clutter and moved it to our storage unit. Still have lots of work to do. This is what the setup now looks like in the unfinished basement.

I consolidated stuff into one small Salamander S20 rack including the two NAS, Raspberry Pi streamer, and PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC. Music is remote controlled with Roon Remote on my iPad. I'll keep this minimal setup until it's actually time to start work on finishing the basement.

It looks pretty ugly at the moment but sounds surprisingly nice with no walls within 8 feet on either side of the Thiel speakers. And the speakers are spaced a good 10 feet apart.

 Watching paint dry would seem like top-notch entertainment, compared to your last video update.

Oh, and "sounds surprisingly nice" - give it a few more years, and AM radio will sound surprisingly nice to you in a freaking unfinished basement.

 Mine are not what I'd call silent and they give off a fair amount of heat.

Definitely pull some dedicated lines over to the rack when you get to finishing the basement or sooner.

 It's temporary. I dismantled some shelves where the NAS were placed and consolidated everything in that tiny Salamander S20 rack which will be the last thing to go before actual basement construction begins.

The setup is there mainly for background music while I work in the basement clearing out clutter in prep for the finishing project. Once that starts there might be a boombox for music at best ;-)

 I like what these guys make. When the time comes, you'd just need your phone, or an Alexa device and a wire. No bigger than a boombox. I have several. You may well know of them already. Probably won't sound quite like what you're used to with that snazzy other set up tho.

 While I am a little familiar with Audioengine, I kind of like their B2 Wireless speaker which will fit nicely under my computer monitor. I wish it had a digital input like TOSLINK or SPDIF, but at least it has a 3.5mm analog jack so you don't HAVE TO rely on bluetooth wireless.

Kitchen/family room remodeling job coming along. Was pretty major project tearing down three walls and moving an outside wall five feet further out. Which required dismantling a huge brick fireplace. The new space is much larger with audio friendlier room dimension ratios. Just received Magneplanar MC-1s to be used as surrounds for the 1+1s. One hangs on wall and the other on large post at end of kitchen island.

I agree. It's temporary as I moved the NAS units from some shelves that I am dismantling. In fact, the small Salamander S20 audio rack is temporary and slated to be the last item in the basement until construction begins. The idea is to have some music down there while I'm de-cluttering.

As odd as it sounds, I'll probably move the NAS units to a bedroom or the family room once basement construction begins. Those rooms are wired with CAT6 Ethernet.

 Big deal was finally getting in the cabinets just under two weeks ago. They came in about three dozen pieces and required lots of fine tuning for installation. New appliances are in storage awaiting their time. Then painting, floors, lighting and finishing.

The closet to the right will be hidden by a hinged painting. It will store the Emotiva amp and Oppo Blu Ray player. All cabling runs through chases in wall and under the floor. There will be floor mounted outlets behind the stats which will also provide signal connections. Below the 65" monitor will be a floating shelf with processor and cable box/DVR.

As odd as it sounds, I'll probably move the NAS units to a bedroom or the family room once basement construction begins.

That achieves the goal for isolation! Glad you're finally getting the rest of your stuff operational.

House came with an attached 'casita' which we've had to usd for storage for the last two years.

Build a new garage so we now have a place to store stuff and the 'casita' will now become a proper listening room for vinyl. Had to run 75 feet of outdoor CAT 7 across the roof from the ComCast modem but that's the way we roll in Northern New Mexico. Everything incuding gas lines run across the flat roofs hidden by parapets.

Rya rug: Check!

Even a casita cat with its own 'condo'.

Sadly, the equipment rack is empty as most of the gear is on the bench for repair.

Edgar Horns WAY too big for the family room so this is where they will live.

LOTS of room for vinyl and the 'headless' Mac Mini finally get a 'head' =:-0

Will likely move the Audio-GD Master 11 DAC/Headphone amp in along with the uRendu for digital. Or could leave the uRendu in the main system and the Pi would do nicely here. The Mac Mini now has LMS, MinimServer, Audirvana and dCS Mosaic running on it and can be controlled by the keyboard/monitor in the casita or my Macbook Pro from the main house.

Next up? A proper NAS as I've got 3TB of music on that 'G' drive sitting next to the mini and that ain't a good way to go.






A work in progress and no furnishings as yet, but the wife wants a new couch in the living room so I get the hand-me-down and she has to chip in big for the new one!

 check this out, this is the NAS I use, bought two extra drives as backup so I have blanks in my closet just waiting for them to fail. Great software and cheaper than the other ones.

right, I have two Western Digital 4TB drives in this one, sorry I wasn't more clear.

I bought two Western Digital 4TB as backup and have them in my closet. One fails plug in another one and it replicates.

AS1002T v2 @ newegg is $159, then you need two drives.

 And yes its runs LMS just fine. A 718+/720+ is a bit pricier, but has a capable Intel quad core processor, lots of memory (I upgraded mine to 8 GB) and supports an external disk box for additional capacity (2+5). Today, however, you can put a pair of 14 TB drives in a 718/720 if necessary. :)

Hardware costs aren't much of an issue, within reason. Got way too much stuff on the shelf not being used because of 'issues'.

Will likely plug in the highest priced, most reliable drives, as well.

Four bays of 4TB each might work.

Would like to run LMS and MinimServer on it.

I can keep Audirvana on the Mac Mini and let it go find music on the NAS, I'm guessing.

 Even easier is to run LMS on a Dedicated RPi Model 4 with 2GB, which is what I do, as well as the Developers of PiCorePlayer... There are some software Dependencies on Synology NAS Systems, that may be Changed or Deleted in the near future, which may render LMS a No-Go on the NAS...

I switched over to a RPi to run LMS a few months ago.... It's much Simpler, as that is the only Task it runs.

The dCS Network Bridge uses MinimServer to stream music from storage. It's the best sounding streaming solution in the house. Betters the uRendu by a small bit and for streaming TIDAL and QOBUZ it works great, albeit only controlled from a phone or tablet(not a PC). Only requires Minimserver to stream music for storage.

Currently running Minimserver on the Mac Mini with the music on a 4TB drive hanging off one of its USB ports. Not ideal, but it works as long as the Mini stays 'awake' and doesn't go to sleep in the middle of a tune.

Multiple Synology flavors available here. The 718+/720+ would use the Synology Intel version.

 Well, if you get a Synology NAS, I can offer free phone support, as that is what I am using and am familiar with it. Synology NAS will also run LMS, if you want.. I recently bought a separate Rpi model 4 to run LMS, which I prefer over the NAS for various reasons. It is what the Developers of PcP use as well. A 2 Bay will give Plenty of Storage for your needs. Also, Synology is known for having about the Best, Friendliest Software as far as NAS systems go. Synology is what Abe and E-Stat have also.

 I'm an old man,

phone support is free, I think I talked to you awhile back on the phone when you bought a RPi, LOL! I think you are all nuts.

this one can't run LMS nor the other server you mentioned, basic RAID level 1 which means as long as one drive doesn't fail you still have your stuff on there. Unplug the NAS, take one drive out the one that failed and throw it away and then plug in a new one and then let the software do the work to replicate and then you have a mirror copy.

I recommended this one, if you need something complicated Abe here can help.

Once you add in the RPi's and LMS you got another whole complicated thing going on, if you add ROON on top of everything else it is even more complicated. I'm just using a Sonos digital out that was modified. As you've heard me rant about that over and over. Sure RPi with picoreplayer is better if it works. And it should.

 Used to not be able to find my ass with both hands, now I have to go looking to find my hands.

But yes, that WOULD work as the Mac Mini would still be in the network and I have figured out how to access it from both the casita via keyboard and monitor and the rest of the house through Apple 'Screen Sharing'.

With 3TB of music on a USB 'G' drive, syncing both Audirvana and MinimServer (required for the dCS Bridge to find music) can take forever.

Plus no backup.

 Just get a 4TB hard drive similar to what you already got and please make a backup copy of what you have for yourself. It is important. It is better to make a backup than not, NAS might be too complicated.

 as long as you got a backup. that's good news if I am understanding correctly as 3TB is a lot. I'm under 1TB with a room full of CDs still left to rip. I feel like a factory worker when I am ripping, that's why I like the lossless streaming services, it saves me some time.

 ...and very spacious and bright too! Wow, that's a lot of vinyl. When do you think you'll be completely done setting it up the way you want?

Unfortunately I won't be able to turn our entire basement space into a man cave. We definitely want one bedroom and a full-bath down there. Any left over space becomes my TV / listening room.

As you know I gave away most of my vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and kept just a couple dozen LPs. Our garage has cars in it so I rented a storage unit 5 minutes away. Still moving stuff into storage. I'm close to that 80/20 rule where the last 20% takes the longest time to sort through and finish up.

 Furnishings in a few weeks, should be playing music in a few weeks as well.

Eventually need subs for the horns as the folded mid-bass horn only goes to 80 Hz.

And maybe another pair of SET amps so I can bi-amp the horns.

The casita was designed as an artist studio (in Santa Fe everyone thinks they are an artist) so it has lots of glass on three sides. Thankfully heavy wooden Venetian blinds over all of the windows so the glass shouldn't present a problem for room acoustics.





Ceiling fans gotta go, and will likely add a mini-split for heat/cool. South facing wall is the long one on the right side of the speakers it does get some sun/heat in the summer.

Not quite rectangular 350 sq. ft. room so should be fine.

 Add some Oriental Rugs and Big Leather Furniture.. Soft lighting is good for the vibe as well. Throw in a Big Screen TV for Movies and Such.. Fridge and a Wine Cooler and you'll never want to visit the Big House.

Look into some Class 'D' Amps like Hypex with a built in Active Crossover for Bi-amping.. I got a pair of these about 8 years ago for $400 apiece. Nice Snappy Bass and a lot of control with the active Crossover. Where Do the Bass Bins Pass to the Horns?

 Wow, that's a spacious and inviting listening room! I see a pool table back there too.

When I'm listening to music in my unfinished basement with concrete floor and exposed joists above, I'll close my eyes and imagine that I'm in your man cave. ;-)

 Well Thanks! ..... And yes I have a Pool Table there also... When we built the house about 20 years ago, I wanted a very Large Open room for Music, Pool etc... Only have 1 Bedroom and 1 Bath Down there... I wanted the 'Men's Club Room' Feel... I do have a Pantry/ Wine Cellar down there as well. Upstairs is the Wife's domain.

 And no TV for me. I'll be hiding in the man-cave to get AWAY from the TV.

Small refer, stove and all is in the corner. Sink will be mostly for record cleaning.

The casita is mostly for tubes, horns, and vinyl so I'm sticking with 2A3 or 300B SET amps for the horns.

They are currently crossed at 500Hz first order. That may be a problem for the bass bins as 1000Hz is only 6dB down and 2000Hz is an audible 12dB. The tractrix horns are no problem as they start dropping steeply at 500Hz. I'm planning to bi-amp and do an active, steep x-over at 500Hz just to see what happens.

Subs are a requirement as well as 80Hz is IT!

 There are some great Music Videos out there in different genres of Music. I especially enjoy Diana Krall, Live in Paris with Full Orchestra. You'll want to Marry her after watching this.

 We watch on TV with TOSLINK to the DAC in the main system. Cost a few $$$ per year and the archive goes back forever and all of the concerts have been recorded and filmed for years.

Never got into the YouTube thing for music for some reason.

 I don't use YouTube for music either.... That was just an example. I have the DVD, which is a pretty good recording.
