No, I don't have the photos from 5/27/89, which was the day/night of my senior prom. My date was KJ, and we teamed up with Tony & Vicky. We took a few pictures, by the Golden Gate Bridge. Obviously, the prom was our #1 topic, but of course we could not avoid talking about music.

And we were taken aback by N.W.A.'s "Gangsta Gangsta." There really wasn't any overarching statement being made. It was just a take on life in Compton.

In 2010, I started working at Stanford. I was surprised, that lectures featured the hip hop from the late-80s and early-90s. My coworkers pointed out that, although this music was from when we were in high school and college, enough time had gone by, that the music (and its impact) was part of college curricula. Some sociology professor claimed that the majority of initial N.W.A. sales came from suburban residents.

Later this year, my graduating class will celebrate its 35th reunion. We never stopped listening to the music from our high school days. Alas, the cost of living in California is out of hand. All those years ago, who would have known, that we had more to fear from gentrification, white collar crime, organized religion, internet scams, porch pirates, climate change, and identity theft?
