Though Newey (his, ahh, newest moniker) is certainly not an ignoramus regarding music, he *is/was* a twit, and often ends up posting insults.

I've never been bugged about insult fests on AA, am definitely capable of returning fire with gusto. I do agree that insults about race/sexual preferences/religion are not ok.

Those that are disturbed by personal insults here should refrain from replying to Newey, especially if you're gonna disagree with him or belittle what he says. IMO just ignoring posts from Newey (or anybody else) is preferable to banning. I wish guys like Clark Johnsen and Romy were still here. I found AA more interesting in those days :-)

By the time I logged on, I noticed that many of his posts were already gone (deleted by one of the other moderators). I deleted a couple more which I felt were questionable. I'm not directly familiar with his history (I think it was before my time here), but I understand from some correspondents that he was already banned (in theory at least) years ago. There are a couple of his recent posts still left, but I'm inclined to leave them unless directed to do otherwise by the higher-ups.

If we don't have moderation, we could get into a situation like they have in the RMCR (rec.music.classical.recordings) Google Group, where some potential posters get demoralized by the personal insults and they begin to drift away over the years. I miss Clark's posts too (Romy's, not so much - LOL!), but I think we'd all agree that personal insults don't add much to the discussion.

New moniker, same tag line.

Too bad, because he occasionally makes some interesting points. He just can't seem to stop with the petty insults.

My apologies if wrong. In any case, he's got more irresistible buttons to push than Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. I'm not the first to succumb and certainly won't be the last. Your HIP comments get under my skin but we get along, it ain't that hard.

. . . the two of us had gotten into it. In fact, I had a pretty decent private correspondence with him at that time, in which I mentioned that I hoped he would post again (after his vacation was up) without all the personal vitriol.

EDIT: BTW, I have some more HIP comments coming up soon! ;-)

EDIT2: I did give myself a voluntary vacation last year, but that was because I felt I was monopolizing this board. ;-)

My wife works with students who are on what is known as as asperger's/autism spectrum, and over the years I've come to recognize some telltale signs. These individuals can be very bright and talented at music, languages, math and science, for example. But they lack the ability to pick up on social cues and empathize with other people. Some spout racist or homophobic insults while being genuinely and completely unaware that they are doing anything wrong, or that it is any different from having an ordinary argument. It's hard to describe, but anyone here who has a relative with asperger's syndrome knows what I'm talking about.
I don't presume to make online diagnoses here, but I've seen at least two posters here who exhibit these symptoms. Criticizing or baiting these people doesn't accomplish much. I usually don't engage them unless attacked directly, and if I do respond I try to be honest and direct without being antagonistic. The trouble is, the moderators can't let racist, homophobic and similar unacceptable posts remain, so there's not much that can be done.
Edit: IMO, jdaniel has exercised great restraint and good humor in dealing with this, but if my suspicions are right, neither restraint nor humor will have any impact.

Nothing like the way Newey (under other monikers) used to push Rob's buttons. Or MusikMike's. Or John E's. Or lots of other inmates past and present.

If you want to get a grip on this guy, you should search Music Lane for posts by SPL, Severius, and various iterations of Severius (they're all him). The "best" ones got deleted, of course, but there's plenty left to look at.

Happy listening,

Thanks for the edit, but I honestly thought he could take it as well as dish it.

I was hoping all along that the Perger's half would eventually manifest itself. : )

deserved.

We do not need to sanitize the forums to the point you have the analogy of people who use anti-bacterials too often. Which is the case of the academic world today.

If you want to read Clark's views look at his FACEBOOK page. I hate FACEBOOK. Think the world of Clark. Wish he would write some articles for PF again.

Romy is the doting father of three toddlers and has no time for the ASYLUM. Or much for his own site!
