When I was very young I always thought he had a very romantic sounding name. Especially for the UK where we had the likes of Adrian Boult and John Pritchard.

There are a couple sets available or available soon, one on Warner and one on RCA.

. . . such as his Berlioz Troyens extended excerpts with Crespin (best Dido ever - I saw her onstage in this role!):

. . . as well as his later recordings from the 90's:

Why are these two works so unjustly neglected? I especially love the E-flat Symphony (No. 1), and Pretre conducts a very fine performance of it!

I've somehow managed not to hear Pretre's most recent recordings however. In any case, RIP.

I'll have to cue up my ancient Angel LP of him conducting Poulenc's Les Biches in remembrance. Enjoyed his work.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
