 Just downloaded 60cds worth of Bernstein conducting NYPO on Sony (from qobuz for 90 euros! - a bargain).

Where do I start exploring the treasure? I am only familiar with Mahler (my favorite cycle), Sibelius (no particular impression) and Shosty 10 (good, not great).

What is your favourite Bernstein ex-Mahler?

 One of my two favorite Beethoven 4ths; yet it's the only one of Bernstein's Beethoven recordings I like.

 Bernstein set some of the late string quartets of Beethoven for a small string orchestra. It is NOT a transcription that makes major changes to the score--mostly adding more players, having basses play some of the cello parts. The result is absolutely magical.

 Save for his own compositions......

Aside from being a showman on stage, his readings of the masterworks have almost always struck me as lacking in depth, nuance, and understanding of the composer......

(I have the same complaint about Carlos Kleiber, by the way.)

 I love the life he breaths into a lot of the War Horses. Especially his Schumann and Beethoven performances, just as Kleiber does in Beethoven's 5th. And, FWIW, he has, IMHO, contributed more to the music scene in America than any other conductor I'm aware of, both as a teacher/mentor, conductor, or composer. We should all be glad he passed our way.

 Though not germain to the original post I lobe Bernsteins recordings of the Schuman symphonies on DGG and Carlos Kleibers Beethoven 5th and Brahms 4th I feel are two great clasical recordings

 chamber version, but so gorgeous and soloists so expressive I always find myself quite moved, and I'm not one to sip wine with tears in eyes listening to records.

 Which ignores some excellent performances on DG, and arguably some very good recordings as well. Including Schumann, Beethoven and Copland. I assume it is because the poster was looking for analog LP's..

 In addition to the discs already mentioned: Shostakovich, Mahler, Nielsen, Haydn, Vaughan Williams, Hindemith, Copland, Barber, William Schuman, and Ives, I'll add:

* The Sibelius 5th.
* Roussel's 3rd
* The Robert Schumann symphonies (another composer that Bernstein had affinity for.)
* Berlioz Symphonie fantastique and Harold in Italy.
* Revueltas: Sensemaya
* Beethoven Symphony 2 (Not a comment on the other Beethoven recordings; I just particular enjoyed this one recently.)
* The Diamond/Thompson/Harris disc.

Of the Mahler recordings, my favorite is probably the 3rd.

 His Vaughan Williams 4th symphony is a benchmark, IMO. There's a splendid Hindemith disc too. The Beethoven concertos he did with Glenn Gould are off-center but enjoyable (to me anyway).

Going back about 30 years: his Mahler "Resurrection" on LP was a formative experience for me.

 Bernstein had a -- to me -- unexpected and remarkable affinity for Haydn.

His performances of Haydn's Masses are also remarkable, as is the music.

 I don't see a lot of talk about Bernstein's Haydn, but it is top notch, as is his Vivaldi. But he is probably better known for his Copland, Stravinsky, Ives and Gershwin, as well as Mahler and of course his own music.

 His Nielsen symphonies are excellent. Wish he'd done them all...

There is a fine recording of Stravinsky Oedipus Rex with the Boston Symphony--not sure if it's currently available.

 The 5th is also a favorite of mine. On a lighter note his recording of his film score for On the Waterfront is quite exciting
