Just wanted to pass on a pic Troy sent of the Danville Maggie system at AXPONA. The towers to the left and right of the speakers are Wendell's new non-Magnepan design, the PlanarBASS. They're H-frame dipole woofers, and Wendell said they're measuring flat to 18 Hz using the Danville DSP.

Look like infinite baffle, is there another view with more woofers?
Does look nice, but appear to be monopole.

They're simple H-frame dipoles -- if there's a trick, it's that the drivers are superbly behaved and are integrated electrically with the panels in a unique way. Here's a picture that Wendell sent -- the sides on this one are quartzite, but sides will be custom and made locally with the material he chooses.

They look like a hybrid between an H-Frame and a U-Frame.

1/4 vs 1/2 setback.

They're positioned so that the acoustic center of the driver is right in the middle. That means the baffle has to be offset.

Friend of mine heard the demo and said they sounded good. He said they said $2500 for the pair with plywood sides ... plus some extra $$$ for the Danville DSP and amps ... not sure the price for that. Presumption is people would replace the plywood sides with locally made fancy sides.

Yep, Wendell's idea is to provide a CAD file and template to a local fabricator so the customer can get custom sides. Where is Peter Gunn when we need him? :-)

We need to see total cost. Apparently Wendell said he doesn't want to sell them without the Danville gear, which is understandable, but we need specs and full cost. What's so hard? Drag them out into a field and do a ground plane measurement.

I would've thought the H-frame driver baffles should've been placed slightly in front of the panels - for correct time-alignment?

Good catch -- but it's all DSP/triamped so they're presumably delaying the signal to the panels.

Heh, well, at 250 pounds they're hard to drag. :-)

It was a push to get everything to the show -- Wendell developed these in record time -- so I don't think there are formal specs yet. He did say that in the room at the show, they went down to 18 Hz.

I think I saw a price on a placard, but it went by quickly.

My understanding of time aligning subs is that the main panels require delay that would work out to placing the subs impractically closer to the listener. But, DSP takes care of this, as noted.

Richard Hollis: the PlanarBASS sub is only sold with the dspNexus. There are options for the sub, so contacting Wendell Diller for that price. Then add for a standard dspNexus 2/8 with AK4493 DACs $3000.00+s/h or for the upgraded AK4499EX DACs $4000.00+s/h. The basic sub price starts at $2500.00/pair.

Not including amps. Richard said they used 250W Class D amps.

Surely, any delay that is required - and whether this is applied to the subs or 'mains' - is determined solely by their relative distances from your ears?

In my case, my subs are about 4' further away than the mains - so my miniDSP unit is set to provide about 4ms delay to the mains.

There is no extra delay inherent in the 48dB L-R HP/LP XO between subs and mains.
