Today I sold my Dutch Millon speakers.
A few months ago I bought a cheap pair of 0.5. They sound very good with my Ayre V6. Reading a lot about my new brand I conclude a 1.6 should be a great choice for me. They sell in Holland around 800-900 euro/dollar. Do you agree with my choice for the moment?

the 1.6 was my first Maggie, it was like a door had opened into another dimension.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking for.
I often read the 1.7 is not that coherent in balance.
I like the bass of the 1.5 that's standing still here.

I often read the 1.7 is not that coherent in balance.

If you refer to tonal balance, tweeter resistors can tailor that.

When I think of coherence, it has to do with the speaker's drivers sounding as one. Which is why I favor full range electrostats.

FWIW, in a nicely driven reviewer friend's system, I found the 3.7 more coherent than the 20.1. The latter sounded like a collection of (nice) parts.

The 1.6 a very good speaker however any pair that you can buy today are going to be a little long in the tooth. Before purchasing you should listen very carefully for evidence of delamination. Don't overdrive them but do get them up to 90db with heavy bass. Ideally removing the skirts is the best way to know the true status of the speakers but your seller may balk at that. Clearly sending the speakers back to Magnepan for repair is out of the question so you want to be sure.

For that money the 1.6 is a no brainer, but........... to reach its full potential you would need to seriously upgrade what's up front. That's the thing with Maggies, they sound decent with components in the same price class, but really start to sing at the end of a serious system.

There is only 1 version of the 1.6, with or without "SE".

The lack of balance, or coherence in the 1.7 has to do with bass output, nothing a tweeter resistor can fix. The 1.6 is the better speaker.

Used 1.6s are likely to have tracks of delimitation, if considering purchase, take a strong flashlight with you, stand in front of the Maggie and hold the flashlight behind the Maggie shining towards you through the cloth, loose wires will be visible.

Even with loose wires the 1.6 is still a great buy, there are a couple of experienced people in the Netherlands who have repaired dozens of defect Maggies, one being Rick Paap of Dynamic Solutions.

A pair of 1.6s with delamination would be around 700e to have repaired.

I will never donate Rick Paap 700 euro.
A thew hundred is enough. I have several friends in the hifi world.

Rick doesn't ask for a donation, he presents you with a bill for his work done. Labor costs in the Netherlands are sky high, removing staples, socks, glueing loose wires, putting everything back on 2 Maggies and performing a final testing is time consuming, resulting in high labor costs.

"A few hundred is enough", really? for what? to perform everything stated above? Is one of your friends experienced in repairing delaminated Maggies and willing to do a full repair for a few hundred? I doubt it.

Just out of curiosity, if you really have several friends in the hifi world, why do you constantly seek advice on a foreign forum where there is hardly any knowledge of the European situation as far as pricing, brand availability and typical room acoustics are concerned?

There are people who only wanna critisize the behaviour off others.
Or letting know how smart they are and how stupid you are.
That's not helping each other in this great hobby.
In the USA is much more knowledge about Magnepan. The Netherlands are also "a little bit" smaller.

I bought the 1.6 QR today. They look like new en sound fantastic. After a few seconds I wasn't listening to the speakers anymore, but only to the music. They have been serviced two years ago. The man seemd also to be a musician. He had bought a 3.6 now. These sound bigger and more relaxed. But for 700 euro I'm very happy.

But at my home I have a way to much high. They sounded great at the seller's home, but here it's to sharp. The jumpers are silver, the rest in my system is copper. Can the jumpers be the problem?

If the highs are too prominent relative to the bass, you can try adjusting toe in, move the speakers closer to or farther from the wall, or use the resistors that came with the maggies originally.
The resistors are included because rooms, furnishings etc. are all different, and this affects the sound. Magneplanar wants you to enjoy your speakers.
The silver jumpers might make the sound bright I guess, put the original jumpers back and try it. Or use some copper wire instead. Use the resistors if needed, they are for taming the highs where it's necessary. Good luck.

That's a great reaction. Toe in helped already a little. I'm making copper 4mm2 jumpers from good speaker cable. Another idea: The tweeters are at the outside. Shall I try the tweeters at the inside?

You should be covered then. Don't forget to move the speakers in and out from the walls. It affects the bass, which affects the perceived treble.
Did the new jumpers make a difference?

Problem to much high solved. The 10 Watt 1,5 ohm resistors are the solution.
Standing before them you could the highs were playing to loud.
Around that 1,5 I wanna go experimenting al little. What an overwelming sound have these 1.6 speakers. An upgrade would even be possible with better filters in a little box behind the speakers.

Very little response lately. But a new item.
What does your Maggie do with copper or silver cables and interconnects.
I am changing from silver to copper in tubes. Can I say goodbye to the resistors?
