I heard a pair of 2301s drive 3.7s very nicely at Sea Cliff.

Mike Hobson brought some really nice white album vinyl to hear.

Do you mean transformer or Autoformer?
Different but related 'things'.....

some people, myself included, are not huge fans of the Mc 'house sound'.....Or Bryston, for that matter.

That is ONE expensive set of amps. In that space? MUCH competition from Krell, Pass and a host of others......
Each of the 2301s uses 8x KT88 output tubes. You might be able to use KT120s, but check with Mac first....

And MAYBE KT 120s or KT90 OR even KT100?

I'm looking into the VTA M125 Kit and you can pretty much take your pick from that list.

I don't even know what it comes with 'stock' but gravitate to the 88s based on expense, availability and sonics.....

Each monoblcok takes 4x of 'em....

Nope. Bea recommends using Gold Lion KT-88s with MB-450s of all generations. VTL does not support the use of those other tube types with current product.

Is the VTL amp in question Auto Bias? That might make a difference.

Also? the different tubes might be 'best' with slighly different resistor values??

current series III version is. VTL's tube suggestions are independent of that question.

Not a big fan of the Mac House Sound......

For the same $$$? Several other possibles come ot mind......

But I'm at the point where that much cost is out of the question and besides? I'd rather spend 2500$ on a certain lens for the camera than a new amplifier.

But I DO want to go give the Klipsch Forte IV a listen.....That's an attractive idea. Especially if I end up building a couple VTA M125 Monoblcok amps...

Sellling my current Maggies and PAIR of stereo amps would put a big dent in the potential bill.

Mac enthusiasts are all about cosmetics - especially the the BFM.

While the following pic is found in Michael Mercer's tribute to HP, it was after my visit when I switched off the cyclop's eyes. I found the useless meters distracting. ;)

A small but vocal school live and die by the meters. Me? Meh?

If I cared, I search around and find the Radio Shack meter 'thing' from decades ago. Install a blue LED and call it good.

From what I've read the output source impedance of Mcintosh amps is decently low, which I tend to think makes a good match with Magneplanars. I'm not talking about the "8 ohm tap -4 ohm tap" etc- I'm talking about the actual output source impedance, which is different than the "rated matching speaker tap" type of thing.

So it would seem that Mcintosh amps have at least a chance of driving a Magneplanar speaker.

When I was looking for an amp for my 37i I called McIntosh and they said not to use an autoformer with Maggie's, they lost a sale but I appreciated the honesty.
