from fb (not me):

Just unboxed the LDW 1 woofers (Little Dipolar Woofer) shipped to me for review. They were securely packaged in sturdy boxes and the finish is professional and very durable looking and they are built like a tank. I will be listening to these on a both the 1.7i and LRS ( which they were originally designed to companion with). May get in an initial listen in later to day on a break from tuning about 2 dozen stands that need to be shipped.

Hi Green Lantern,
Just wondering whether you've tested these LDW's yet. I'm looking at purchasing a couple of these for my Magnepan LRS Speakers here in Australia, but there's no way of me auditioning them. Would appreciate any insight.
Thanks
Anthony

That Parts Express/Dayton Audio plate amp is packed with a considerable amount of configurable features.

I saw you asked a few questions on the other forum. Did the answers make sense regarding the direction of the cardioid pattern, etc.?

The bit that Pass "approved" the design was kind of ... vague?

Honestly I was surprised at how many people were so critical of this product when I (innocently) posted over on the FBook page. Like, arguing with me about what a bad idea it is. Maybe it won't be "30.7 for Condos" ... only "1.7 for apartments"? :-)

The comments came off to me as advertising gimmick "name dropping". Phrases like "tested with a Pass Labs amp" doesn't make it any more of a Pass Labs' design then my OB/Dipole subs tested with a Mark Levinson or Jeffrey Rowland amp make it a ML or JR sub.

I see the diagram now indicates it as a cardioid design. I still think the diagram is backwards though if you actually measure the radiation pattern vs the SPL in the constricted port.

From Linkwitz Labs, U-Frame on right:

H-Frame and U-Frame:

That being said, the end result is how it sounds. Supposedly, there are reviews in the works.

One other thought. It uses the floor and the LRS as top and bottom baffles on the port side, so their effect need to be taken into account. There are no left and right baffles like in the SLOB design.

The point of contention is the labeling as a "dipole" woofer scheme. That's simply a vented-box woofer with the "box" sort of contorted around to fit the placement. I see nothing innovative at all. The impedance plot will look something like a typical double-hump.

Supposedly it's inspired by the slot-loading technique employed by Pass in one his efforts, but the loading in this case isn't anything like that.

Robert Raus is an appropriate person to evaluate the woofer because he doesn't have any technical or speaker-design background and will evaluate it subjectively

Dave.

I wonder what driver they're using..

Information on the VPE Little Dipole Woofer is available on my website including a dowload URL for the User's Manual which explains how it works and its relationship to the Pass SLOB design.
