Is that a good enough argument? She could get a Toyota for the same money.

And the contra-argument was "But I love it!"

And with the warranty expired, it's going to get expensive. (nt), posted on March 11, 2025 at 12:07:12

That's a tough one to overcome.
My daughter loved the little modern VW bug and ended up hating it.

I gave her this:

but she hates the Lexus style... I do too, but there are other brands down there.

The vehicle might still be built in England but who knows these days.

Unfortunately she will need to learn this the hard way. Land Rovers are beautiful, comfortable, and oh so posh, but they are British. Under warranty chances are high that they spend a good deal of time at the dealer and the issues are typically listed as "software issues." If she buys one out of warranty the same "software issues" will be prevalent but no loaner to drive and a bill will follow. The Sirens of Land Rover will call your daughter to the shore only to by crashed upon the rocks, but riding around in one is a cool comfortable look and that is what sells them.

I don't know and don't care what that vehicle is. If she's out of the nest, and on her own to buy it, it's her decision, not yours.

He had a PR company and had to project a "success story" even thought the company was barely making profit and he was spending all the money on clothes and pretentious lifestyle he could not afford. I asked him about that old Rover he was driving suggesting that if he skips the purchase of a few trendy suits he could easily buy a better car. He said that the Rover is one of those brands which no matter old or new preserve the status and image and nobody will question the choice.
I would let her have it and not scold her if the car will end up being a money pit. They all are.

We have (had? as don't recall seeing it lately) one in our neighborhood. A bit ugly if you ask me, but it has that look of intrigue that I could see being popular.

1. They're more expensive used than new.
2. If you can't afford to buy new, you can't afford to buy used.
Bottom line, it's her choice. Nice looking ride for sure IMO.

I always loved the Rover style... many years ago we almost bought the 3500, it was at that time one of the prettiest cars on the road... by far.

Mopar's plucked chickens, too:

Both of these cars are works of art compared to recent Lexus designs.
And don't even get me started on Mitsubishi.

I had a 65 Rambler ambassador, it might have started life as a good car but when i got it, it was nearly worn out and then was at just short of 80k miles.
At one point I replaced the rockers and shaft when it started jingling, the new set started to make noise too. I ended up putting a T at the oil pressure sensor and a small valve and ran a line to the top of the valve cover, through a small hole i drilled in the shaft and cover so the oil could lube the rocker shaft and rockers. Apparently an oil passage in the block was blocked.
This car had two engine mounts and a "torque tube" but that was a different repair.

Nash/Rambler/AMC, pretty interesting. My dad refused to own one back in the day because of the resale value. Said you bought a Rambler you were married to it.
We did test drive a '63 Classic wagon, 6-cylinder engine, 3-on-the-tree. It needed a clutch. This was in 1968.
It's probably good that the old man passed on it. The six Rambler used up until 1965 was a Nash engine, an OHV head on the old flat head block. It was a good running engine but not very durable. The head bolts needed to be retorqued every 12k miles, it was scheduled maintenance. There were cooling system issues and the head didn't seal very well. It was a much better engine in the smaller American (which was a reskinned Nash Rambler by the way).
That torque tube rear end would have made clutch replacement an expensive proposition. Dad was a DIY'er but I think pulling the rear axle would have made him think twice.
My wife and I went to DC for the weekend once, and when we came home, this was sitting in an empty lot at the end of our street:

That's a "for sale" sign in the window. The car was dragged into the yard, all four wheels were locked up and so was the engine.
Guy who lived next door to us bought it and was trying to free the engine when he noticed that the entire body structure was starting to collapse with the car on jack stands.
That was the end of his project.

Since I have no interest in this car segment I had to look up Lexus current offering and first thought I had was " there must be some 3D printing shop which could make a suitable cover for part of that hideous whale like front grille"
hahaha

I wonder if this is what she likes about them ? Interiors can mean a lot to (some) women...

You might be able to change her mind about buying an unreliable car like the Rover by finding her a better car with an equally nice looking interior ?
