Nvidia unveils $3,000 desktop AI computer for home researchers
Project DIGITS can run a local chatbot or other AI models up to 200B parameters in size.

AI is advancing exponentially. It blew through the turing test, now the debate is whether it's sentient.
At $3000 it can empower humanity.

A year ago you'd need hundreds of thousands of dollars to get less.
One of the AI dangers is weaponization under centralized control.
This all but guarantees distributed AI rather than centralized.

If we get control of the weapons we can rule the world mwahaha.

Quantum computers are poised to send traditional computers the way of the dinosaur. Over at Foreign Affairs, Charina Chou, James Manyika, and Hartmut Neven discuss the quantum computing race that is accelerating behind the scenes amid the global buzz around AI:

"Whereas a classical computer must process one state after another sequentially, a quantum computer can explore many possibilities in parallel ...- making it orders of magnitude faster for certain tasks. Quantum processors may one day be capable of breaking even the most advanced encryption. Today, national security experts assume that hostile state and private actors are already collecting encrypted information in anticipation of the new technology, an approach known as a 'store now, decrypt later' attack ...- There are multiple futures for a world with quantum computers. The best one would see liberal democracies leading both the technology's development and its collective management. A worse one would have the United States and its international partners, through inaction or insufficient actions, cede dominance of the new technology to China and other autocratic countries."

I'm still trying to understand how they go rushing headlong into quantum computer processing before they can even explain Quantum Mechanics.
Oh well, shut up and calculate.
A fascinating field. I guess progress is being made.
Google is working on their third of six steps they say will get them there.
Step three: "demonstrating an actual logical qubit"

Certainly can't afford to miss that boat. If it floats.

Until they break all of our encryption, QC is a non-starter.

They don't need many, but just ONE QC to cause havoc in financial circles.

Then, we're in real trouble.

Right now, the two fields are mutually incompatible, probably very fortunately for us.

Quantum is a pipe dream, I think.

Ai may be a pandora's box, though.

It may be a good answer to the question of 'Why is science fiction always so dystopian?

Quantum computing is not poised to displace traditional computing anytime soon. QC has its place for "certain tasks". Otherwise, its still a science project.

It may take another 50 years to get a calculator level of quantum machine. As usual, US military is ahead of Google. Noise is a main problem..

And thusly empowering? We told ourselves that fairy tale about the PC - who knew how powerful and ubiquitous networking would become? AI is anything but empowering in the current or any foreseeable political and social environment.

It's a more exciting read or movie than 1000 years of peace living like the Jetson's
