The elder Beierman said he had been tracking an injured bear near his cabin in western Wisconsin when he happened upon the animal in a small clearing under an oak tree.

"He was in a stance like a cat about to pounce,'' Beierman told the paper. "The next thing I know he was on me. He charged and knocked me down.''

Beierman told the outlet he couldn't remember how long he wrestled the 200-pound bear.

"The bear was fighting for its life, and I was fighting for mine,'' he said.

or food or something, so they seem to be on a collision course with people.

Climate change is as good a thing to blame on this as any. They're rapidly losing habitat as well due to wildfires, etc.

Beautiful animals. I've read that they were the original trail blazers in the mountains and we just followed in their literal footsteps.

On my camping trips, I'm encountering them a lot more than before so going to bring bear spray with me next time.

But according to wildlife experts, they're plentiful even in suburbs. They try to stay away from people and are skilled at hiding.
We've got black bears around here, not brown bears like the grizzly. Supposedly, you get attacked by a black bear you should punch them in the face.

They (black bears) are around here but they stay away during the day.

At night they like the challenge of "protected garbage cans" and bird feeders. People look sort of fondly on them, the town even has a Bear on the Square day celebrating a bear was in a tree in the town square.
The small ones are cute

They are also dangerous, wounded animals are not to be taken lightly, he should have had the rifle.

If you are bear hunting with a 9mm, you are supposed to file down your front site flush first.

Believe me...I'm glad I've never seen one. I'm out in the forest on bike trails, could ride 15 miles without seeing another human. Get torn up by Smokey back in the woods, could take a loooong time for help to arrive.
When the trail takes me into deep woods, I'll ring the bike bell every so often as a warning to bears.

My junior year I think, Ronnie Delgado all 300+ pounds of him. I was probably 160 lb.. I'll never forget the feeling of being surrounded by his mass after he fell on top of me. Lucky P.E. ended and before I gave up. Hope Ronnie is still alive and doing well.

Lived in Prince Rupert until I was 12, we'd check for wildlife before heading to school. We also did family trips to the landfill to watch them. Dad would back the woody wagon up to the edge, we'd sit on the open tailgate, bears would be pretty close.
Sometimes see them around here. Camping an hour away we had this little fella hanging around for a while. Cute.

I once saw a large black bear put one paw on top of a dumpster then effortlessly vault in. I wouldn't want to try punching one but I guess it would be worth a try.

Clearly Yogi is waiting for his foot to grow back, the new ranger's bear traps around picnic baskets were an unpleasant surprise.

I had a buddy who got into a ring with a kangaroo at a county fair. The kangaroo beat the crap out of him. It was hilarious.

If the sow has cubs and you startle her. But maybe your inner McGuyver would save you.

You might wanna consider having something with you for protection, just in case. Or not.

Don't leave me
Out in the forest where
I might
Get eaten by a bear.
The bear cub thing is in the back of my mind when I'm riding really remote areas but I can't plan for every contingency. Carrying bear spray is one thing, getting to it fast enough to use it is another.
I could always use the bike itself as a defensive weapon. Mebbe.

Anyway, I didn't make it up. Wildlife experts warn people to stay away from bears, but if you are attacked by a black bear the best thing you can do is make yourself seem as large as possible and if that doesn't work, punch the bear in the nose. With brown bears like grizzlies, best you can do is stay still.
In neither case should you run.

When I was in my early 20s I drove past a farm house and noticed a black bear cub chained to a doghouse so I did a U-turn and checked it out. Turns out the people living there had a DNR permit to have it. They had two adults and then got a cub or two every year. The woman who answered the door was very friendly and said go ahead and play with him. He loves to play. He was small and the top of his head came up to my chest. He stood up and wrapped his arms around me and pushed me any direction he wanted to. He was smaller than me and strength wise completely overwhelmed me. Easy to realize that with an adult bear one would be in serious trouble in an altercation.

At the time I was living in a house with two roommates and one of them had a young German Shepard that I always got along with very well. When I walked in the door that dog completely freaked. It backed into a corner whining and peed all over the floor. From that point on that dog ran away every time it saw me.
