...apparently, Ford is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), regarding engine failures of it's 1.0L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine used in the EcoSport, and other Focus and Fiesta models.

The investigation is prompted by consumer complaints regarding engine failures ultimately caused by premature failure of the internal wet belt system used to drive the engine's oil pump. Although Ford recommends a belt-replacement interval of 150,000 miles, engines are failing at less than 1/3 that mileage. The belt degrades, failing to properly drive the oil pump, and/or debris from the degrading belt clogs the oil pump intake, starving the engine of proper lubrication.

Although use of the wet belt drive system is not widespread in the industry, the linked article does mention other engines from other manufacturers that employ wet belt drives for oil pumps and cam-shafts.

Wow, Dark, REAL bad news for Ford. Potentially.

I wonder how many of the failures can be laid at the feet of owners simply NOT doing proper maintenance???

My brother had HIS V6 Diesel, in a Dodge Truck, simply blow up at 18,000 miles. HE was a maintenance fanatic, having working long-haul trucking for a couple decades and doing everything from insurance to driver training and recruitment. He never 'abused' is equipment.....

Keep in mind that GM had originally eyed this engine for use in Cadillac.....

JUST went thru the article. Failure mode is, I suspect, Not to be laid at the feet of the hapless owners. I think this is going to end up costing Ford a lot of $$$$......

Well, as a matter of FACT there was such an enigne choice.

Made by the Italian company....VM Motori, it was a 3.0 liter and about 250hp with plenty of torque.

You could get this engine in several Dodge and Jeep products.....My brother had one in HIS truck and it simply blew up at about 18,000 miles. The trans was a slightly uprated 8 speed, IIRC.

Good idea if you didn't want or need the Cummins. But poor choices made it a hand grenade with the pin halfway pulled out.......I think one pully which had something to do with timing was only end-bolted to a camshaft. when it slipped? WHAMMO! If it had been pinned or keyed? Lifetime.

My brother reported the trans 'hunted' for gears.....a LOT, and even with the truck on the flat and unladen.....
Pulling a load? and up a grade? THAT'S what did him in!

His replacement? A FORD F250 SuperDuty with that big 6.7 DIESEL and 6 speed auto. Now THAT was a truck!

From the WIKI on VM Motori....in part.....

L630 applications (North America)
2014-2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Branded as EcoDiesel

Thanks! I had only known the Cummins (great engine!). I worked in a Dodge Dealer 2000-2006 and was only familiar with them. These foreign engine stuck in domestic vehicles just never seem to work out well... except for the bean counters.

My Pleasure.
A suprise to me too.....and when it went bad AFTER I had recommended it to my Brother?

At one point? GM was eyeballing it for use in the Caddy line......They apparently 'Dodged' a bullet...

When My brother worked for a trucking company in some executive capacity, his 'company car' was a big RED Dodge 2500 or whatever, WITH one version of the Cummins.
First thing he did? Off to the dealer for fuel, air and a general going over with Oil Change.
He really got some range out of that brute out on the highway and it held enough #2 for a small Jacuzzi.....

My question has always been....How could a company using the Cummins THAN go ahead and market a Turkey?
