...apparently, Ford is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), regarding engine failures of it's 1.0L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine used in the EcoSport, and other Focus and Fiesta models. The investigation is prompted by consumer complaints regarding engine failures ultimately caused by premature failure of the internal wet belt system used to drive the engine's oil pump. Although Ford recommends a belt-replacement interval of 150,000 miles, engines are failing at less than 1/3 that mileage. The belt degrades, failing to properly drive the oil pump, and/or debris from the degrading belt clogs the oil pump intake, starving the engine of proper lubrication. Although use of the wet belt drive system is not widespread in the industry, the linked article does mention other engines from other manufacturers that employ wet belt drives for oil pumps and cam-shafts.
