Doesn't do much to keep the weight off middle-aged guys either.

...aren't these sold and fully consumed? I know big tuna is usually sold for thousands of dollars.

Certainly marlin fishing off the US East Coast did, years ago.
Ocean City, MD hosted a white marlin tournament for years -- I don't know if there even are any white marlins to catch off the mid-Atlantic coast any more.

The ability to catch & release is what I like best about fishing. That and the zen of fishing. As a good friend of mine liked to say, "notice that they call it fishing, and not catching." :)

Catch and release doesn't work so well with hunting. :(

I was an avid (although not terribly serious) fisherperson for a long time -- for whatever reason, it's been years since I last went fishing, though.

... and, no, not a deep-sea fisher, although I've done more than a bit of salt water fishing on and near the US East Coast.

all the best,

Blue Marlin is a gamey tasting fish and generally not eaten.

A waste of a beautiful creature.

I am curious what the procedure for releasing such a fish consists of?

I hope not just cutting the line.

Unless you're a commercial fisherman I don't think you're allowed to sell your tuna catch... in CA anyway. My brother-in-law fishes tuna off the coast of Southern California and further down toward Baja. They take a charter boat from San Diego for several days of luxury* fishing. He will catch huge tuna and have them processed at a nearby processing plant. He keeps some and gives most of it away to friends and family.

*I call it luxury fishing because the boat is fairly large, they have a crew that help you with anything and a chef serving up outstanding meals throughout the day. They also have nice sleeping quarters. The boat captain is always on the lookout for fish with his sonar and knows the best spots.

I went to a fishing camp for a three day weekend once with some co-workers. The camp was owned by a large vendor we did a lot of business with. We were taken by boat to a camp in the swamp. From there we went in small boats and fished for redfish and speckled trout along the coast. It wasn't glamorous, but the rooms were adequate, the food was good and the booze was free. The camp consisted of an anchored floating barge with bedrooms, a community bath, a commercial kitchen, a large screened in porch that had a pool table, table tennis, and a few pin ball machines.

When we came back from fishing, a couple of us started to clean the fish, but we were told, that would be taken care of. A few guys went shrimping with one of the guides the first night. The rest of us played cards and had a few beers. The food was decent and we all went home with lots of cleaned and flash frozen fish.

Generally the fish is pretty tired and brought by the side of the boat. Tagged and hook removed.
Often they are held by the side of the boat while in gear to force water through the gills to re energise the fish a bit before letting it swim away.

Bigger fish are harder to handle and the hook can often be left in, but stats seem to show the hooks get shed by the fish.

Unfortunately big fish as big as this one sometimes die. I don't know the stats, but there's a +90% survival rate.....

Completely separate entrances and visually partitioned off sections for men and woman. You thoroughly wash and rinse outside of the community bath pool. The steaming hot water community bath pool is for soaking only, no swimming. But I was just a 4th grader kid in the 1960's so I swam! Never got kicked out but scolded many times.

Homes had baths but the hot community bath was a treat especially during the cold winter months. Nothing sexual about them.

pocket trout while covering up their minnow amongst their fellow manly men.

A sad stereotype.
