...related to the drug-overdose deaths of their customers?

I can't say that I'm necessarily opposed, since I don't support the distribution of illicit drugs. BUT, I thought we already put into place serious penalties for drug-trafficking during our multi-billion dollar "war on drugs"?

OTOH, as a result of attempts at reducing the prison populations, we are decriminalizing "possession of small quantities", and are now treating casual users (aka junkies/addicts), and small-time street-dealers/users as "victims" of a more serious crime (homicide/manslaughter).

There have recently been vigils held for overdose victims, and protests at courthouses to hold the dealers accountable, but totally avoiding the issue of any accountability/responsibility on the part of the user that died.

I'm sorry--if you are out buying cocaine, heroin, or pills on the street-corner (or in the office), there is no expectation or guarantee of quality or purity--and you are committing a crime. Had you survived your overdose, you should be sharing the same cell with your dealer, not treated as a victim.

I don't understand the "logic" of this trend...

Drug dealers should be made to consume the entire stash they are busted with in a single dose.

Problem solved.

No need for additional tax $$$, no overcrowded prisons.

While I hate drugs I have had family members who were addicts. It is apparent that you have never had loved ones who suffered this illness and your statements come across as fascist as it can get. I mean you act as if one cannot get drugs in jail...

...but drugs are (were) illegal, as are public intoxication, and DUI//DWI.

Decriminalization of the possession of small quantities of illicit drugs does nothing to "solve" the issue of drug addiction. Nor does it discourage dealers from continuing to sell/distribute illicit drugs. It simply keeps addicts of jail.

Addiction is also related to a whole class of "minor crimes" like prostitution and property crimes (burglary/theft). It certainly is also a significant factor in the homelessness issue across the country.

Not necessarily saying that everyone should be doing 15 to life for a handful of pills or a couple stamp-bags and a needle (that was the "war on drugs" approach), but they should be held responsible to some degree--not just their dealer.

Perhaps we should be investing in state/federally-funded mandatory court-ordered re-hab centers/programs (in lieu of prisons)?--IDK?

Simply writing a citation, ignoring the entire issue, or arrest and release immediately clearly isn't working--it simply reads "lather, rinse, and repeat".

At least with fentanyl, when there is clear evidence that a particular dealer sold the drugs that caused the overdose death. I don't think it's a stretch to consider the dead person a victim.

Someone who dies or is seriously injured by faulty products sold legally. The sellers, manufacturers, distributors should be held liable and jailed. Not the victims even if they made poor choices.

...but I don't see purchasing a contaminated bottle of Tylenol or canister of baby formula at a WalMart the same as purchasing a bag of white powder from some "dude" on the street-corner, or the mail clerk at the office as being quite the same.

And dead is more than enough punishment for a bad choice.

There have been more than a few cases where big pharmacy and chemical companies used knowing harmful ingredients in their products. And yes fentanyl is truly an evil substance, but how can one blame the victim for this? In the US dead is not just punishment for a bad choice...

...the stuff that's killing people by the thousands is not being manufactured or distributed by a major Pharma company, and scripts aren't being handed out like Halloween candy by licensed physicians.

It is being manufactured mainly in China and shipped to primarily Mexican drug-cartels for distribution in the US. This is not part of a big-Pharma conspiracy.

These so-called "victims" are illicit drug-users getting more than they bargained for. How can you blame the victim? Well--if they weren't out trying to buy cocaine, heroin, or oxycontin on the street, then they wouldn't be getting "product" laced with fentanyl. Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless the laws have changed while I slept, purchasing any of those products on the street was still illegal in all 50 states.
