Several people dead and many others injured there today.

What struck me about the coverage is that the so-called "security" responded by corralling hundreds of travelers into an open tarmack area. That's not a smart thing to do. It makes them all easy targets for a second or third killer to mow them down. The reporting states that "security" is still looking to see if there may be other killers in the area. WHAT are they thinking?

If I were told to stand in a crowd in the open and wait while they see if there's other killers laying in wait, the first two words out of my mouth would be "fuck you", and I'd be moving to a less exposed location.

Edit: changed to "injured". My mistake.

Which serves no purpose. When it's all done maybe we will learn why it was done. As you know it's about what was known and when it was known. You don't have that information.

I'm hearing they put everyone out and then bring them back in through security checks. This has been done at other airports too in similar situations. The shooting was done indoors in an unsecured area either baggage claim or arrivals.

My daughter and sister flew into FT Lauderdale a five days ago when they went back home.

It's too bad that some posters injected politics into this thread. My observation about having hundreds of people standing in the open and being an invitation to a greater tragedy wasn't political, it was simply an observation of what was going on. "Secondary" attacks have happened before, where "first responders" were the target. Thank goodness this wasn't a coordinated attack by several people.

Unless everyone thinks that "the response plan" was perfect and that government ALWAYS has the situation under control, there should ALWAYS be prudent observation, review and possible changes to be made. Having people standing in a large group in the open while still looking to see if there were additional killers was a glaring mistake which could have, but fortunately didn't, result in dozens or hundreds more people dead.

Definitely not dealing with a full deck here.

Time to change laws and funding levels around mental health in this country? Way past time, IMO.

I'd have thought that they would have placed him on the no-fly list.

but will never happen.

This country can't get basic physical health care funding/planning together for
our populace let alone something as exotic as "mental health".

You're as guilty of it as anyone here and the fact that you and I likely vote identically doesn't excuse it.

We must remember the Victims and their families first.

Yes the shooter should have been on the no-fly list. An active shooter contingency plan is executed from the perspective attacker- meaning- if a perpetrator is inside, then move to outside and /or higher ground.

If a shooter is outside then move indoors and/or take immediate cover.
By performing these tactics, all, makes the job more difficult for harming civilians.

I was thru Ft. Lauderdale on the 20th of December. Sat there for hours awaiting my flight but NO bad vibes or other 'here we go' moments.
