Over the years, we've heard hundreds of holiday offerings -- and now we've whittled that massive list down to the 12 Coolest Christmas Albums of All Time. They may not be the biggest hits of Christmases past. But they should make you the hippest DJ on the party circuit.

12) South Park Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics (1999) Stan, Kyle, Eric, Kenny and their cartoon pals put the X in Xmas with Christmas Time in Hell, Lonely Jew on Christmas, Merry F**king Christmas and, of course, Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo.

11) Low Christmas (1999) Those who prefer a bluer Christmas will be in tune with this melancholy offering from the Duluth slowcore trio.

10) Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas (2006) Indie-popster Stevens makes his own presents -- holiday EPs he gives to friends and family. Now, he's regifted them to us in this five-disc box, which comes with comics, a poster and more.


9) Emmylou Harris Light of the Stable (1979) Country queen Harris is a true Christmas angel on her down-homey offering, which welcomes guests like Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young and the McGarrigle sisters.

Not even kitzch!

pop music approaches to Christmas remind me of Dr Johnson who
noted that as with a dog dancing on its hind legs, and a woman's preaching, that you admire the learning and effort, while wondering WHY!?

My musical faves are the King's College Cambridge carol collections, and some other choirs efforts! Closely followed by the 4 Advent Carol Services, and Bach's equivalent for the 4 Advent Sundays the 4 cantatas that make up the Christmas Oratorio!

I do have a few popular Xmas songs that I like, like Jingle Bells, RTRNReindeer, Bing's IDOAWChristmas (although I've never had one!) etc. IZZAT okay?

Pretty much everything about the current mass of culture christmas shits me to tears! The emphasis not on giving (and wht it is symbolic of) - but on getting and on display.

Mind you I do CELEBRATE Christmas, and I DO enjoy food and a drink.

I still place Easter above Christmas.

One further concession, Xmas as a usage is fine by me, the antecedents of the X in this context mean christ anyway! Izzat pismire-y enough?

And I must say I now find 'Phil Spector and Christmas' kinda oxymoronic. So, good on yer Bwookie!

There are some cool Easter tunes, too.

The last bit of Handel's "Messiah" comes to mind...

Or, one may thumb through a handy hymnal...

 Ella has a couple, and there's even a compilation that was released on CD, I think it's "Jingle Bell Jazz." Very cool! I think I have the CD somewhere, but I also have the LP.

I think Ellington, Basie and others have done Christmas LPs...including the ubiquitous Sinatra Christmas LPs.

 The coolest Christmas albums I own are mostly obscure:

"Fred Waring presents the 1957 'Capitol of the World' Christmas Recordings"
"The Life Christmas Record"
"Christmas With Gisèle [MacKenzie]"

But my favorite nowadays is "Christmas" by the notoriously Canadian Bruce Cockburn. Miss this one at your own peril! It is terrific in every way, including sonically.

 I agree with you if it were I, I would say that Bruce Cockburn should be on the list too. If it is any consolation, Anne Murray and Celine Dion are not on the list either.

 There are two variations of the Emmylou Harris "Light of the Stable" LP cover.

What's the difference and which is the rarer cover?
