Well, damn and blast. Junior could play and Sammy could write. Two real
good ones.

Do we have comparable replacements for people of this caliber?

Yes, Junior could certainly play. Yes, he was underappreciated compared to others. Yes, he will be missed. I have a few of his LPs. However, yes there are relatively young talents coming up these days to take a seat at the bench, many discussed in this asylum. On keys: Victor Gould, Theo Hill, Micah Thomas, Keith Brown, Sam Harris, Sullivan Fortner, Miki Yamanaka,Gerald Clayton, Isaiah J. Thompson, etc. . . . . Which of them will stand the test of time, who knows.

Nestico really knew how to arrange for a sax section. Especially bari.

I should have mentioned for those who don't know -- Nestico wrote some very nice charts for Basie's band. nt, posted on January 22, 2021 at 06:54:40

Too bad. I had the privilege of seeing him several times many years ago at a club in the Village in a duo with Marty Rivera. Great stuff!

I'm guessing that club you recall was Zinno's. That place was oh so right. Great music, sound, martinis, and food
