Only got to hear him once in Florida. Pretty amazing. Did things like (all on one tune) play the melody on tenor, play his solo on trumpet, play the head out on flute -- and sounded damn good on all the axes.

Ira was an institution in Chicago. Though he'd been living in Florida for years, he continued to come through town for a couple weeks every year. I met him in '95 at a place called The Chambers in Niles, IL. He was a remarkably unique multi-instrumentalist. I've never seen anything like it any other time. He was also very encouraging to the younger guys (which I was back in 1995). After Chambers closed, a group of us went to a late-night restaurant in the city and hung til 4 AM. I'm sad to hear of his passing, and I'm sure there is a whole scene of guys in Chicago and elsewhere mourning tonight. R.I.P.
