 Listened to Joe on WBEZ radio in the 70's. Went to three different iterations of the Jazz Showcase in the 70's and 80's before moving from Illinois.

My friends and I always thought Joe had the legendary Dean Benedetti wire recordings of Bird until they turned up and were released by Mosaic. He'll be missed.

 I took my 12 year old son to the Blackstone Hotel to see 2 Sunday matinee performances, one by George Coleman, the other by Charles McPherson, both with local backup groups featuring Jodie Christian on piano. Still, these were good enough to turn my son into a lifelong jazz fan.

 My first ever jazz show was at the basement club in February 1975 (which was destroyed by a fire about a year later). The headliner was Milt Jackson. The MJQ has played their "last concert" three months before and he came in to play with Joe's "house band" of Jodie Christian, Victor Sproles, and Wilbur Campbell. Only Vic was unavailable and his replacement was a young Steve Rodby who was barely old enough to drink alcohol.

The best surprise, however, was an opening act that wasn't on the bill - Sonny Criss.

Saw so many great shows at the first two clubs. Only went to the Blackstone once - but I got to meet Allan Eager before the show. I knew the DJ who was interviewing him and sat in during the interview.

 There are so many great unsung musicians in Chicago--no need to think you were getting less than the best because they were "local."

 Didn't mean to imply that these were anything less than excellent performances because the backup groups were in any way inferior.

 I don't think Joe had been involved in running the club for some time, his son Wayne had taken over the reins when I was still in Chicago, what, 20 years ago? I caught the Showcase once at the tail end of the Blackstone Hotel days, and then several shows at the following location on Grand Ave. Great times.
