Hi there!
I just recently got a beautiful pair of Altec 604E. They were mounted in an extremely large and bad sounding cabinet (too much and indifferent bass). Now i´m looking for a way to build new cabs - either reflex or (may be better) backloaded horns
to help the bass to gain level to mid/high level. I like a dry, fast and not necessarily very deep bass.
If anyone has got schematics or ideas i´d be very glad to listen.
Greetings from Grmany, Klaus

Hi Klaus - although not uncolored, a Karlson Ultra-Fidelity enclosure with 604E should play bowed bass with very likelike bloom (I used the N1500 xover scheme) - and not bad on piano w. vocalists such as Hans Hotter's Schubert lieder - very little cone excursion even with rap bass at 115+dB using 416-8 - maybe 3-4mm p-p with a solid-state amplifier

Hi Freddy,

looks very nice - good job. Means "bass at 115+dB using 416-8" that the efficiency is about 115dB/1W/1m or is this the max. sound pressure level? Would be great. What efficiency did you measure for this 1W/1m?

Joao

Hi freddyi!
thanks for your message! But: 604E is a Coax-System with this
beautiful cellular horn in the middle which has a disperion of about (nominal) 90degree horizontal. I think the carlsson Coupler is more a specialized bass-unit.
thanks anyway for your fast reaction, klaus

hi Joao -

efficiency of the Karlson is maybe 3-6db above reflex in 50-100 region - 60 watts brings a nice level 10*log 60~17.8, so add 17.8 to the speaker's sensitivity for a rough estimate of output - Karlson box loads well

best,
Freddy

Hi Klaus - in one of my factory Karlson boxes run 604 Duplex converted from paper surround to cloth surround with a series network- HF isn't too badly affected - but may not please your ears - I think the initial slot opening plays a major role in upper midrange characteritics besides slot taper and type of reflector panel - the old Karlson tends to have a somewhat laid-back upper midrange which can be pretty on piano - I like the subjective punch on drums and sound on bass violin - one can feel the basswave - seems to energize the room nicely.

best,
Freddy

Freddy, does this mean, that with 1W it follows 10*log1 = 0dB. There with i.e. a 416A and it's sensivity of 99dB/W/m the Karlson owns a sensivity of 99dB/W/m?!

See you, Joao

depends - from ~60hz up a couple of octaves the Karlson box is 3-6dB above reflex varying with woofer- I think they load better all things considered

best!
Freddy

Hi Freddy!
Your sound-description matches exactly where I want to end up!
I just worry about upper mids - means voice range - and lower high freq. dispersion. Upper high freq. shouldn´t be affected too much. Problem is the level between bass and deeper mids - I haven´t any experiences with Karlsons in that way.

best, Klaus
