I was visiting Snell Acoustics' web site where they have specs on out of production speaker models. The sensitivity of the J-II (a 2-way) was given as 92 db, the highest of all of the speakers shown on this "old" speaker page. Anybody know if the impedance curve of this is relatively flat? I thought at 92 I could get away w/ a 300B amp (haven't built one yet, want to get the right speakers first), but would really like to use a 2A3 amp (3 watts??) and figure the impedance better be benign or else there might be a problem. I was planning on low to mid level listening anyway (got other amps/speakers for loud). I seem to read alot of posts about Snell E-III but nothing much on the J-II. Anybody know why?

thanks.

Ross--- Do you have a Radio Shack meter? If you have one measure the peaks at your listening seat when listening at what you consider loud and post the numbers here or email me with them.

I had a pair of speakers that where SET friendly and 92 db rated. In my room I listen at 96-98 db peaks (sometimes louder) measured at my listening position at times and the 300b's didn't cut it. (98db BTW is pretty darn loud)

OK, but help me remember, which setting on my radio shack meter do I use (C weighted?). I'll post the results. I will give you what I consider 'loud' but not 'too loud' (i.e., too loud is uncomfortable, or extremely rare I would ever play it that loud, etc.).

You referred to your situation as having SET friendly speakers but sometimes the 300B's didn't cut it. Are you saying that you ultimately wouldn't call those particular speakers SET friendly, or are you just pointing out that we're operating on the edge here, walking the line between great music and the occasional failure of the amp to meet the challenge (something I presume horn fans don't run into as often)?

I'll get back to you.

"C" weighted "peak" is what I used in my situation.

In regards to the 300B's I liked the sound so much I sold the 92db speakers. What I meant is the amps pooped out (audible clipping) on peaks below my prefered loud 96-98 level. The speakers where Coincident Super Eclipse with a minimum 10 ohm SET designed to be friendly impedence. My room is around 2800 cubic feet and pretty dead. I moved the speakers closer to me to try and overcome the problem, and ended up with them 8 feet away. I recommend a higher sensitivity speaker than 92db anyway.. with SETs it's the first watt that has most of the magic, I found that out when I went to a much more sensitive system!

All I could find in my Snell booklet is J-III is 8 ohm with a 4 ohm low. Snell tend to swing low in the ohms load.
I have the following Snells:
Q
K-II
Type D
XA 75
XA 55(center)
30sp(rears)
I hope this helps
