Bill,

Could you give us your thoughts on high pass filtering subs?

I have paralysis by analysis (Double filtering, hard knee's. digital vs analog and etc) and was hoping you could cut to the chase with your experience with some best practices here.

Basic crossover schemes and maybe some hardware suggestions would be awesome.

..

I am currently using a Berhinger 2496. Looking for something better.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It depends on the sub. The only way to be sure if it needs it is via software modeling to see the excursion at full power, ignoring below 20Hz, as there's not enough content down there to cause a problem. Software modeling also allows seeing how excursion is controlled by various HP filter configurations. It also allows you to see the effect of cabin gain in residential applications, as that can give a major increase in sensitivity below 40Hz or so, which in turn reduces excursion.
