There is a pair of A7 VOTT for sale in my area and I need some advice on whether they are worth the money. He can't find any serial numbers on them and he says they came out of a movie theater. He is asking $875 for the pair. Can someone have a look at the pics attached and let me know what they think?

Steve,
I'd buy them for that price if the drivers all work. Even if all you do is experience what they sound like, you can easily recoup your money selling the woofers and compression drivers. As long as you are up to the heavy lifting and reselling efforts!!
My hunch is you will need a rather large room to hear what they can do.

Jim

Hello,

I feel that is a very fair price, and if they check out, buy them.

Properly implemented, it is an excellent speaker.

VOTTS need a few things done to them, not too expensive to do, if you are focused and smart enough to know do the right things. I just went through this experience, last two years, and use A7-800s in my home, after some work, successfully.

Contact me after you get them, and I will give you my opinion and experiences of the easiest and most important - most effective things to do, advice given to me by a movie theatre and hi fi, highly-experienced, ultra-reliable source.

$875?! That's a lot of money for a "has been" pair of speakers. Ha! Offer him $200. Those suckers sucked. Dump another couple thousand dollars into them, and they might sound decent.

You're welcome.

:)

See pic. Saw them today, they play great and cabs are in decent shape. I pick them up in a few days.

Label cannot be read.

Could be 802, 808, 804, etc.

Sorry, I though he said "where are the drivers" I mis-read.

He's getting a great deal there if all works.

Test first of course. If you have a place for them they are worth it. If you have nowhere to put them then its not a good deal (for you).

There are 2 versions of those cabs, MDf or the older plywood.
Plywood being preferable. Based on the good condition and side labels
in your pic, just EMPTY cabs bring $300 minimum normally.

The woofer sure looks like the orig. Altec with orig. cone which
would be ideal.

If you can play some music through them and the woofers work
fine, I'd jump on that right now!. The woofers are what's worth
the most here...if working.

If they were near me and I didn't already have a pair of A7's I'd jump all over them provided the woofers work fine. Even if you need HF diaphragm, it's $100 and you can install it yourself without trouble. I would say the drivers are worth the asking price with the enclosures and crossovers icing on the cake.

Certainly worth the money if the voice coils are intact. Will he play music on them for you to verify they are in working condition?

I think so, can take an amp and source. I can also check voice coils with a multimeter.

On the woofer, even if it's blown, the voice coil usually reads OK.

You can gently press on the cone to see if it moves freely with no rubs.
