I want to hardwire my Galaxy s7 phone as the source to an Onkyo 9010 amp>
Right now I'm using a generic 3.5mm to R/L rca. Are there recommendations for connection upgrades. The amp has an optical and coaxial input along with the rca connections. It also has a pretty good Wolfson DAC already so I'm not looking to run thru an external DAC. In short, I'd like to get the most from the source via Amazon Prime Music streaming service. Also thinking about opting for the HD format on Amazon. What do ya'll think?

Wow! Those cables are pretty expensive. Check out the ones at the link below for only $8.27.

The thing I especially like about them is the type of RCA connector they use. It has a split center pin that can be expanded for better contact and the outer flange is also cut so that it grips very tightly. These are topnotch RCA connectors with heavy gold plating. The 3.5-mm connector is also a high-quality gold plated headphone plug.

My experience with a Samsung S7 is that the DAC is fair but not top.
I established this by comparing it with my Benchmark DAC1 using the same IEM.
If you want to improve, a USB DAC is the way.
You might also try a USB to SPDIF converter if you want to use the DAC of your Onkyo.

An alternative is a LG mobile.
Some models do have a very good (quad) DAC.

Are these usb to spdif converters a cable interconnect or a box that the signal runs thru? The phone has the headphone jack 3.5mm and the mini usb for the charger. What are examples of what your talking about?
Thanks for your response!

The 3.5 jack is the analog out.
Recent Android supports USB audio over the USB C
As most DACs en converters are still USB A, you need a OTG cable ( C > A) to get it to work.
A list (a bit dated) of converters:

You might as well settle for a DAC, you can get good USB DACs at a very decent price today

Thanks for the great info..

Does this look like what I need? It has the same XMOS XU208 Digital Interface and it can take connect the two ends via micro usb cable.

" Also thinking about opting for the HD format on Amazon. What do ya'll think?"

The link I have posted gives a a fair report of the Amazon HD situation currently. As per the author of the piece linked I too would think Qobuz ( with its dedicated Android app) a superior option. I run it on my own S7.

I note that various inmates have suggested USB to other format converters. However the S7 is not a recent Sammy so you may need to go to Developer Options in settings to set the ability to activate the USB port for this purpose (as well as use the OTG cable without which it will not work, NB : the micro USB to USB A female converter that comes with the phone will not work as you need one of the USB pins connected that only the OTG cable has). However a recent update to the S7 seems to have removed Developer Options!

I would not use the 3.5mm jack as that means that you are using the S7's internal DAC (not great) into an analogue input on the amp when you have that Wolfson DAC in your amp. So you still need the OTG cable to connect with the phone. This will terminate in a USB A female socket. You then need to somehow convert that USB to coax to mate with the amp. Unfortunately all of the converters that I have seen have a USB B ( female) input! So somehow you therefore also need to find a USB A female to USB B male converter. They are are all out there!

This would all be a straightforward proposition if you had a DAC with a USB input. But there it is.
